Game Jackal is a PC application developed by Australian based company Jacal Consulting that allows users to play PC game titles without the need for the game's media to be in the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. The program functions similar to a virtual drive, however instead of making use of large disc images, Game Jackal uses a proprietary format which takes up considerable less storage space by working to only capture data the game requires to run.
Game Jackal is advertised to work with around 90% of games on the market, including some of today's newest titles such as Sid Meier's Railroads!, Neverwinter Nights 2 and Need For Speed Carbon. A full list of compatible games tested (to date) can be found on their Successfully Played list, compiled by Game Jackal users. While the authors admit not every title is bound to work with Game Jackal, support is gradually improving and regular updates which combat various bugs and blacklisting, as well as expanded functionality in the building of its profiles.
Game Jackal works by establishing a game profile which is used to store all of the game's relevant data. At first, you are required to have an original copy of the game in order to perform an initial boot so Game Jackal can successfully 'capture' the game for use later. If a first attempt at capturing a profile does not succeed, it may be performed any time after and anything else Game Jackal picks up will simply be added to the profile.
Game Jackal is no longer an officially supported program, with their website stating only a single line on their front page: "We regretfully announce that due to circumstances beyond our control, we are unable to continue selling Game Jackal."
Legality
The legality of the usage of Game Jackal is still constantly being discussed. Its authors claim that the program is completely within legal boundaries due to the fact that:
* The profiles are designed to be created from original copies of game CDs.
* The profiles can not be publicly distributed.
* The program does not modify any of the game's contents or data.
As of 20th January 2007 Game Jackal has ceased to be developed. The GameJackal website has been taken down and now the following message is displayed along with the Game Jackal logo, We regretfully announce that due to circumstances beyond our control, we are unable to continue selling Game Jackal. This seems to be because of changing Australian copyright laws which came into effect as of 1st January 2007.

I'm interested in it if it gets better than it was. I had it for awhile (I am a serious gamer as you can see from my sig). It was kind of cumbersome to use and I found it only moderately successful. A lot of times I found a no cd/dvd crack (which is a lot easier, and yes I do buy all my games) before the program would work with a specific game. No cd/dvd cracks exist for just about every game except Starforce protected ones, which Game Jackel can't do anything with either. I never found a game where Game Jackel worked when a successful no cd/dvd crack did not already exist (and that was the point of me getting it). The Game Jackel forum is full of posts with issues and unresolved problems (I know, I've posted there). I ended up just un-installing it cause finding a no cd/dvd crack ended up easier to do, was more successful, and I didn't like that it was plugged so deep into the OS. The program is a good idea in theory (it's what attracted me to it in the first place) cause it gets to be a hassle to insert a cd/dvd each time playing a game, especially when you have over 50 games. I'm all for making a gamer's experience more user friendly. You'd think game makers would be behind a product like this being it only works if you have the original disk to start with. The product does need improvement though, I hope if someone brings it back, they are prepared to do a lot of work on it. To tell the truth, I don't think the program stands much of a chance succeeding if the game makers are not going to get behind it (and it doesn't look like they are cause to this point, all they seemed to be doing was trying to blacklist it to keep if from working). I think there was more to it than copyright laws that made them fold. The program was problematic and I don't think they made any money on it. I hope I'm wrong.

Let's start with something... hmm...
(Please note that I don't give official statements. Just some ideas for your discussion. I don't know the answer to most of these questions myself)
Did SlySoft really buy GameJackal?
SlySoft has a history of buying cool products (remember AnyDVD and CloneCD? Both were bought from Elaborate BYtes AG, Switzerland), so you might want to make comparisons.
*If* they bought it - what did they buy?
The name? The program? The people behind it? The technology? The whole company?
Why did they do it? Just selling the same products that existed before? Squeezing money from existing customers? (unless SlySoft got it really cheap, this would be stupid)
How much did it cost? Will they ever get their investment back? Do they have a bigger goal? Merging the technology of GameJackal with CloneCD? And Virtual CloneDrive? Creating the "Über Game Clone Copy Emulation program" everyone has been waiting for?
Looking at AnyDVD's and CloneCD's track records, will GameJackal be equally well maintained and updated? Who will do all this? Poor overworked James again? (yes, that's me)
Who will be bought next? Alcohol Software? Sony? Microsoft? Apple? Sun? :D

Because this will certainly not be covered in the press release. Out of curiosity (and sorry to sound stupid), how important is x64 compatibility?
Do games really run better under x64? I had the impression that quite the opposite would be true.

i know they were working on having gamejackal work with vista.i took this from my update log in gamejackal. Release v2.8.17.490 - release
* Fixed a bug that could cause an "Insert CD" message to appear when Game Jackal loaded.
* Fixed a bug that could cause the Extended Profiler dialog to hang at 100%
* Fixed a bug that was causing an error to be displayed when launching under Windows Vista.
* Improved the launch speed of some games.
* Improved application icons to be more Windows Vista friendly.

If they are x64 coded, then they will. Otherwise, there is little to no improvement. What gaming developers are more focused on is using more than one core processor.

Not sure if they run any better but as far as I can tell they don't run any worse. The problem I have with some games with running Vista x64 was the copy protection particularly with Tages in Paraworld, had to get a no-cd crack to get it to run. Other than that all my games run just fine. Game Jackal on the other hand does not :( it installs fine, looks like it's running fine, seems to do the profile as it should but when you run it it just... does nothing, sits in the task tray spinning it's little icon away, so yes x64 compatibility if VERY important :agree:

*sigh* well that sucks
7 games on DVD, all crash with GJ on Vista Ultimate x86 (6 are securom protected and 1 Tages, didn't expect the Tages one to work)
3 CD-ROM games, 1 Securom, other not sure but both crash, 1 Securom Star Wars Empire at War - Forces of Corruption does NOT crash and plays fine so far
ALL above games, except the Tages protected one, work using images made by BW6 and mounted with Daemon Tools 4.08 using Y.A.S.U. 1.07 to hide the VD's
List of games that crashed EVERYTIME:
[DVDs]
Star Wars - Best of PC:
- Empire at War
- Knights of the Old Republic
- Battlefront
- Jedi Knights II - Jedi Outcast
- Republic Commando
Titan Quest
ParaWorld (Tages protected and didn't expect it to work)
[CD's]
Age of Empires III
Star Wars - Battlefront II
Only game that has worked/not crashed so far:
Star Wars - Empire at War - Forces of Corruption
I have about 6 more games to try, all on CD but am not holding out too much hope. Posted this so that Slysoft sees that work definately needs to be done to this potentially great program to get it working with Vista x86 & x64 versions.

Actually, no, I do not. However, if and when GJ is released I will. 8)
From what I've seen, SlySoft has a good rep around the net. A friend of mine has a copy of AnyDVD and has been very pleased with how up to date they keep the program.
All of that combined with their location leads me to the conclusion that SlySoft will most likely be a great new home for Game Jackal. Time, of course, will tell. But I'm confident in my prediction so far.
