HD-DVD to Blu-Ray Conversion Guide ( Author:Glen8 )
========================================
http://www.glenharrison.com/bluray
If you don't have Scenarist you can leave the guide at step "Scenarist" and follow the rest which is explained here. It should work so far.I hope the problem with the jerking in VC1 HDDVD stops with it but I am not sure please try it out and let me know.(Thanks). Please use the newest beta of Tsmuxer(Check on forum.doom9.org) if you don't use Scenarist.
If you haven't got a Blu-Ray burner and want to make DVD-5 or DVD-9 AVCHD discs then you need to cut the .ts file into smaller segments.
Load up TSSplitter and import your video.ts file. Select wish disc you wish to create (DVD-5 or DVD-9) and click go but DONT click start.
Now, this next part might sound weird but it's the best way of making everything work....especially if you are working with VC-1 as they don't like being split into multiple parts. In the middle part of TSSplitter make a note of each discs start time. Now exit out of TSSplitter.
5. Load up TsRemux and drag in your video.ts file created from tsMuxer. Put a tick next to both the video and audio and
select Blu-Ray as the Output Format. It might be a good idea to change the chapter points to 10min intervals. If you have a Blu-Ray burner click on Remux. If you want to author to a DVD-5 or a DVD-9 AVCHD you need to alter the Trim Beginning and the Trim End to achieve the correct output filesize. Use the start times you got from step4.
6. Load up Nero and choose either Blu-Ray / DVD UDF disc. Manually change the UDF version to be 2.5. You want to turn multisession off and close the disc. Drag both your BDMV and CERTIFICATE folders to your disc structure and burn. This is the same process for BD-R/BD-RE/DVD-5/DVD-9 etc etc
NOTES:
With this guide you don't get menus(which is impossible to get), subtitles(after VC-1 is done people may care about that), and only one audio stream which you pick (after subtiles are done people may care about that).
Some steps of this guide might look so if you do things twice or something like that, but if you follow every step of it, you can be sure the result will be in sync and the picture isn't reencoded the audio is(with Sonic filters so that is good enough). You really can live with the quality.
If somebody has ideas to improve the guide. Feel free to post them. I will try to reproduce them and then I will discuss them with the author of that gudie. Especially ideas on how to implement subtitles and how get more audio streams(and that you can pick which you like in PowerDVD) are welcome.

so as far as I understand this, it does not reencode or change the video quality anything? and not the audio either if you dont use eac3to to compress?

I need some help. I am trying to convert Top Gun (H.264 & True HD). I want to keep the True HD audio, not downconvert it, so I am assuming that I should skip step 3. When I get to step 4, I input my video file(video1.mpv) from H264Info and my audio file(audio.mpa) from step 1. But tsmuxer tells me that the audio file is an "Unsupported Format: Can't detect stream type. File name: "C:\VIDEOS\audio.mpa". What am I doing wrong?
DonCarlos
25th February 2008, 04:48
True HD is always the big problem. Tsmxuer doesn't like it that much. You can try to rename the '.mpa to '.thd and try it again. If it still doesn't work you have to convert it. But by the way If you use the sonic filter the quality is really top so I don't think reencoding the audio is that worse.

DonCarlos, this is a very nice procedure. Over the last two days I tried it and it works.
I was a little confused the first time I read what I've quoted above, so I thought I'd post a little clarification.
After the video.ts file is loaded into TsRemux, both audio and video selections have check marks next to them, and one chooses the "BD" output option, one can see the total length of the movie in the area just above the "trim beginning" and "trim end" boxes.
Just for an example, let's say the total length of the movie is 03:07:23.95667, and let's also say that we're going to split this onto 6 DVD-5 dvds. (Yikes!)
Let's also say we want to create a one-disk iso test disk, and that it will be the FIRST disk.
And let's also say the start time of the SECOND disk is 00:33:13.
To make this disk I left the "trim beginning" at 00:00:00.
I then subtracted the start time of the second disk from the total length of the movie. That is,
02:67:24
-00:33:13
=02:34:11
Therefore, I set the "trim end" box to 02:34:11 and hit "Remux".
The second disk would have the end time of the first disk - 00:33:13 - entered as the "trim beginning" point, and the time resulting from the subtraction of the beginning of the THIRD disk from, again, the total length of the movie entered as the "trim end".
Et cetera.
Thanks again for the great procedure.

I tried this procedure on King Kong, but I had a problem. The resulting vts, and then m2ts, files played OK, but audio is out of sync by about 1 second too early - that is, hearing words about 1 second before mouths move.
Any suggestions?

I suggest you are using the English language stream right? I have a similar issue here with bourne 2. For my tests I used always the german language stream and that was always ok. Then I found out that the english one is just one second shorter and that second is missing at the beginning. So you can delay the stream with Tsmuxer or with Scenarist about one scond and that should fit.

Thanks for the prompt response, Don.
Yes, I am using the English language stream, so what you recommend sounds very reasonable to me.
I don't have Sonic Scenarist.
I've taken another look at the TsMuxer GUI and I don't see any option for delaying the audio stream with respect to video. Would you be kind enough to tell me how to do it using either the GUI or, as one does with eac3to and vc1conv, using commands in a MS-DOS window?
Thanks very much for the help.
Edit:
Answered my own question. The option for audio delay only becomes visible after the two files are loaded into Tsmuxer and the audio file is highlighted in the lower of the two boxes in which they appear. Then the Option becomes available to delay audio for a prescribed number of milliseconds - in this case, 1000 milliseconds. I'll post again after I've tested and determined the appropriate exact number of milliseconds - for Kong, at least.
Edit again:
1000 milliseconds is perfect. Good, smooth playback in MPC with audio in sync.

Guys I need your help.
Did anyone of you convert a VC-1 HDDVD by doing exactly (and all) the same steps which are in the guide and then burned the resulting BD structure on a BD-R and tried to play this one in a Blu ray standalone player? If yes please post it in here or PM me and say if it worked correctly (with no stuttering and sync problems) and please post me on which standalone player did you play it . Because I think the guide should work so far. There are some problems with the Audio length. Sometimes there are audio streams which are one second shorter than the others. You delay this audio stream with Tsmuxer about one second and it will work correctly.
It would be really nice if you helped me.
Thanks

DonCarlos,
I will try to help.
Tomorrow I will put a DVD-r, single-layer disk (containing a 30-minute portion of Kong) into a PS3. I'll report back the results - probably tomorrow night, but perhaps not until Friday.
BTW, this disk plays perfectly in our HTPC using HP DVD Play (Pdvd).

29th February 2008, 13:02
Well, the disk played just fine in the PS3.
The PS3 read it as AVC data. There was no menu, of course, but FF, Rev, skipping and Pause all worked.
Too bad I don't have access to any other BD standalone, but I'm sure others will give that a try sooner or later.
Hope this helps the cause.
DonCarlos
29th February 2008, 16:53
That sounds really good. So there aren't any issues with stuttering or no sound and so on?(King kong is VC-1 right?)It is normal that the PS3 read it as AVC data. If it would be on a blu ray disc it should be a BD-R.
Thank you very much for your help. That means we can leave the guide so far for convertig. At the moment there is no option to integreat subtitles and multiple audio streams, because as far as I know Tsmuxer doesn't support that. So when Tsmuxer is updated we will see if we can add those. last missing things. The menu of course isn't possible.
If anybody finds issues please post them.

I'm glad I could help.
Yes, KK is VC1 - at least that's what EVODemux said it was.
I did not actually see the disk played back myself, but my videophile friend did. He owns an RS1 projector, a 120" screen and, on top of that, he's a very picky viewer, so I believe playback must have been essentially perfect.
BTW, DonCarlos, have you ever burned any split any vts-to-image files onto DVD+R DL? I bought a couple of 15-pks that were on sale, but I have not opened them yet. If they're not going to work, I'd like to know that before I open them.
Thanks.
DonCarlos
29th February 2008, 17:42
Sorry I never used this split function myself. It was developed by glen8(the author of the guide). But as far as I know there should not be a difference in using DVD+R or DVD-R , because today almost every player has support for both disc structure formats, I mean the filestructure on the discs is the same. That is all I know sorry that I can't help you enough.
Tony1M
29th February 2008, 18:53
Thanks.
Before opening a big pack, if I can, I'll buy a single disk to test.
Edit:
DVD+R DL works - at least in our PC. HP's Dvd Play BD/HD-DVD (Pdvd) plays it very nicely.
I'll try the disk in the PS3 and report back - probably not until next week.

HD-DVD to Blu-Ray Conversion Guide ( Author:Glen8 )

2b. It would be a good idea at this point to rename your video.mpv to video_original.vc1.
Click start > run and type in cmd. Click ok.
In the MS-DOS window navigate to your vc1conv folder and run the command:
vc1conv c:\videos\video_original.vc1 c:\videos\video.vc1
Hi, here is where i'm having trouble as I don't know how to use dos commands.
Can someone give me an example of the exact wording for the command window?
Tony1M
2nd March 2008, 02:33
In XP, there are two easy ways to get a DOS window:
1. Hit Start, select Run, type cmd in the Open blank, hit OK and the DOS window will open.
2. Hit Start, select Programs, Accessories, then slect Command Prompt.
In Vista, select Start, All Programs, Accessories, then right click on DOS Window and select Run as Administrator.
In either XP or Vista, once the DOS window is open, if the program "vc1conv.exe" is located as follows: C:\vc1conv\vc1conv.exe, type the following command:
cd c:\vc1conv
Hit "Enter".
What then appears on the screen should be:
c:\vc1conv>_
(with the underline on the right flashing - indicating that it is ready to accept the next command)
Assuming that the video_original.vc1 file is located at c:\videos\, and you want to store the new video.vc1 file in the same location, you then type {I have indicated a single space in the command line with the notation (space)}:
vc1conv(space)c:\videos\video_original.vc1(space)c :\videos\video.vc1
Hit "Enter" and things should start happening.
The above is the same for running the eac3to program. Open the DOS Window, cd (change directory) to the directory holding eac3to.exe, then type the command exactly as it is written in the first post (as long as the input and output files are in the same places, or course.) For example, if the audio track being converted to ac3 is dd+ (named with the extension ddp), and the video file is a vc1, the command line should be :
eac3to(space)"c:\videos\audio.ddp"(space)"c:\videos\audio.ac3"(space)-nero(space)-640(space)-stripPulldown
(Yes, the quotes go in the command line as shown.)
Hit "Enter"
Good luck.
(BTW, when converting an HD-DVD AVC H.264 video file using the H264info program, be prepared to wait awhile for results. Our AMD 5400+ computer took between two and three hours to convert a 25 gb file.)

How can the picture and sound be perfect if you are getting stuttering? Do you really mean stutter or do you mean out of sync, if it's out of sync you will need to delay the DD track by 1001ms for the audio and video to be in sync, you can add the delay with eac3to, I converted the DD+ track to DTS (with the 1001ms delay) muxed it with the VC1 into a .m2ts container, it works flawlessly (btw, my comments relate to play back from another media player and/or PDVD, I have not tried it on a ps3, as I don't have one)...

Is that the same as a ".thd" track?
So, for the purposes of the procedure in the first post of this thread, when using eac3to to convert the audio stream to ac3, should one use the "-libav -640" switch after the eac3to command, or something else?
Thanks.

no need to specify the codec, eac3to picks the best default codec based on the file types of the input and output files, so no need to specify "-libav", just give your output Dolby Digital file the type .ac3 and eac3to will do the rest... I believe the MLP stream is TrueHD...
you can also feed the stream to eac3to and let it tell you what it thinks it is, for example: eac3to MLP.stream.00
without any parameters...

search doom9.org, lot's of folks have done what you are trying to do successfully, I believe I read something about removing pull downs when converting HV-DVD to PS3 m2ts... streaming creates a lot of other issues, your network has to be fast enough to handle the bit rate, NFS and HTTP streaming works out the best, stay away from SMB...

I am also interested in streaming to the PS3 - I've spent quite a bit of time on Doom9 but have not been able to creat a file from a Blu that streams properly. It is interesting that the PS3 seems to be fussier about what it accepts from the XMB - and I know my network is up to the task as I have steamed some very high bitrate 1080p HD-MPG2 vobs over the network.

Hi folks,
great documentation of ohwo to convert hd-dvd to blu-ray but i have a problem.
I converted transformers (which was h264) and there were no problems.
I've tried to convert some vc-1 hd-dvd's like the mummy I and II or Tombraider II.
After demuxing the files with evodemux 0.627b7 everything is allright. i ran vc1conv 0.3 and everything is still okay. After that i used eac3 to convert the audio to DD.
Now when i try to mux a .ts or a .m2ts with tsMuxeR1.46b the resulting video ist bucking/jerking from time to time especially on scene changes in the movie.
it only happens after muxing all files together and only with vc1 hd-dvd's. The video i got from vc1conv runs perfectly before i mux it.
I play the files with powerdvd.
Any idea what went wrong?

I'm new at this and was having a hard time with this guide. I'm lost in DOS and could not get into tsMuxeR but I am able to use tsMuxerGUI.
I may have a much easyer method.
1st run EVOdemux then tsMuxerGUI had the audio delay issue and I'm currently redoing the remux adding more delay I started with 1001ms I'm up to 1400ms 1200 was almost good.
this is way to easy there must be a reason it won't work

Do you think the developers of the guide made it that komplex if it was so easy? With your method you can be lucky and it will work on some players, but for example if you leave vc1conv outside your streams will stay in 1080i and are not Blu ray compliant so that is not what we want.
By talking about the problem with VC -1 and the jerking (this problem is known) we know where it comes from. We don't know how to solve it in an open source way. The problem is, that the audio which comes from EvoDemux is in 29.97fps. The movie is in 23.976fps(after using vc1conv) as it should be.The problem now is if you mux them together you get this jerking. If you had Scenarist you just could switch the framerate of the audio. So if anybody knows a tool(with detailed description how to do it)which can change the framerate of the audio stream is welcome. We know the eac3to strippulldown option but it does not work that good.

I knew there is a good reason. It's just that parts of the guide are way over my head. tsmuxer being my biggest hurdle. I can't even open it. I'm pretty much lost from that point too.
Mostly I'm going to buy BD discs but there are some great sales on HD-DVDs.
For BD I just rip it then use tsremux to size it down and I'm leaving it alone after that, for now. From what I read (BD+ aside ) this simple method will work most of the time.

DonCarlos,
I gave a full movie (2 DL disks) to my friend who owns the PS3. As always, I used your quide on the first post of this thread to create the disks.
My friend reports that he sees fairly frequent "frame drops", or "hesitations" throughout the movie. He is still able to enjoy the movie, but he does notice those things. I believe that this is a result of the audio issue that you mentioned above - that is, the audio is 29.97 fps and the video is 23.976 and eac3to does not do a good enough job with stripPulldown.
I have looked at glen8's updated guide on the Doom9 Forum. From reading that thread, I presume that you are follwoing that updated guide now and I am also attempting to do so and I have a question about using Surcode to encode the 6 wav files.
When SurCode has finished encoding the 6 wav files (that were created by eac3to) into a single DTS wav file, should I be able to play back that DTS wav that SurCode has created?
The reason I ask is that after I load the 6 files into SurCode, I am able to play back all 6 files at once from the "source", before they are encoded into one DTS wav file, but when I try to play the DTS wav file that SurCode has created (using SurCode or any other player), all I hear from our Denon AVR 5800 receiver is static.
BTW, I send audio to the Denon via spdif, and the Denon does great DTS decoding, but, again, all I get is static when I try to play that file.
Any idea why this is happening? Should I be able to play that DTS wav file by itself, before using Scenarist and TsRemux to create the final m2ts file?
Thanks.

Hello,
I am new here. more active on avsforums.
I have been ripping with Anydvd HD into EVOs and then rebuilding them with EVO demux into one file with multiple languages that I can play in Nero Showtime 4
Is there any reason that I can't skip step 3 and load them straight into nerovision?

@Tony1M Sorry I had not time to test the new guide myself will try it next week.
@bjmarchini If you want to load your files into nero there is no problem at all. You just will get problems when you try to burn a BD and try to play them on an standalone player.

Hi guys,
Maybe I didn't search enough through the forums, but I have seen that, recently, tsMuxeR has been updated to version 1.5.1 (beta). And all the work of conversion is now A LOT easier!
I have done the test with Bourne identity HD-DVD, and everything seems to be OK (but I haven't played the movie entierly, nor with something else than PDVD). Maybe you should give this a try!
Here is "my simple guide". Keep AnyDVD HD loaded of course ;)
1. If you have a DL HD-DVD, then copy the features files together by a "copy":
copy /b x:\HDDVD_TS\FEATURE_1.EVO + x:\HDDVD_TS\FEATURE_2.EVO c:\MOVIE.EVO
Else, just copy the FEATURE.EVO to your hard drive. (Maybe it is not called FEATURE, but I am sure you understood I was talking about the biggest EVO files ;) )
EDIT : This part could be replaced by the "append" button on tsMuxeR... have to do some more tests
2. Open tsMuxeR v1.5.1+ and import the MOVIE.EVO
It recognizes everything itself (movie, and DD+ tracks), except subtitles. (DTS and their HD variants should work too!).
If exists, remove any 720p video track.
3. In the Output panel, click on "Create Blu-Ray disk", then Start muxing and let it do its job!
As I said, I played the created folder in PDVD, and nothing went wrong. So no problem of conversion with audio and video anymore!
BUT, I would like someone to try this method and play it on a PS3 for example, to be sure that it works outside of a PC ;)
Will try with Matrix now... :D

I tried Matrix (US) now, and watched the entiere movie. Here are the results of the test:
- the "append" button in tsMuxeR works great with multi-EVO files, for HD-DVD DL movies, no need to do the copy command.
- Dolby True-HD is not recognized (yet?) in EVO files, you will have to extract it with EVODemux, then import it in tsMuxeR. No problem for DD+ and DD tracks.
- Chapters and subtitles are lost (nothing new here)
- Movie plays fine: no glitches, no frame skip, no audio problem, no sync problem
- Movie plays in loop (at the end of the movie, it restarts from begining)
For me, the results are awesome: everything we need to convert in only one software.

You are the second person how claims that: I just say yes it might work on the PC. But it will never work on a Blu ray set top player you ask why?Ok I tell you Your movie stream is not Blu ray compliant, because it has pulldown flags on it. Second the video stream stays 1080i and not 1080p.Tsmuxer will show you that. Third you will get sync problems on the PS3 and other set top players. So come on stop trying to make it easier. It can't be easier if you really want a solid Bluray. The guide above was tested and works. It was developed over months and not over hours. At the moment there is not simple solution to that because Blu ray and HDDVD are completly different formats.
By the way I forgot to mention. The guide has been updated and is now much more user friendly (with pics). DTS is supported now.

I saw that, but I thaught it was a mistake, because on the box it is written 1080p...
And the new versions of tsMuxeR can't handle all those differences between HD-DVD and BD, since BD creation was added?
DonCarlos
22nd March 2008, 11:36
No that is wrong. Tsmuxer sees how the stream comes to him and that is with pulldown flags. The real movie is encoded in 1080p there you are right, but those pulldownflags say the movie is 1080i and in 29.97fps and not the correct 23.97fps.This is made because of the first HDDVD set top players. And as long as those flags stay the stream is not Blu ray compliant and will not work correctly on a set top player. Do you think we made such a komplex guide if it was so easy? Lots of stuff will work on the PC but not on the set top players. We tried many things but the only solution which works is the solution above. And we are far away from a one programm solution. We too would like it but it is wrong. And there are many things you forget to do with your guide. The video stream mistake is not the only mistake but that is the mistake I can show you without explaining to much.
(Guide is updated with pics. And now supports DTS.)

The problem is, that the audio which comes from EvoDemux is in 29.97fps.

Where did you get this idea from? The audio is 23.976fps.

From where do you know?. I get this idea from scenarist, because that says it is 29.97 if I open it. And then I change it to 23.97 and everyting is fine.

DonCarlos, I answered my own question.
If I save the SurCode-encoded file as a xxx.wav, I can not play the file. As I said, all I get from the Denon is static.
But if I save the encoded file as xxx.dts, I can play the file using MPC and it sounds just fine. All the speakers have the proper sound coming out of them.
Good.
Now on to Scenarist.

You can use Scenarist BDA 4.2 or later. The one you see in the guide is 4.2.

Maybe 29.97 is just Scenarist's default selection which it always uses without even looking at the audio? I don't know. But a raw audio stream doesn't even have any "framerate" information in it. Neither DTS, nor (E-)AC3, nor TrueHD does have such an information. They only have a samplerate information. That tells us how many audio samples there are per second.
Changing the "framerate" (duration) of an audio track is very complicated. In order to do that you need to decompress the audio, then resample to another samplerate. That's the only way you can change the "framerate" (duration) of an audio track. No HD DVD/Blu-Ray player does that on the fly.

I followed glen8's prcedure to the letter and ended up with a movie split onto 3 dvd-r disks.
Today I personally viewed the disks as they were sent by a PS3 at 1080p, 24 fps to an RS1 that was set at 24 hz. The display was a 120" screen and the viewing distance was about 12 to 13 feet.
To be brief, there was no skipping, suttering, juddering, jerkiness, hesitation, slowing down or speeding up. In other words, the movie played absolutely perfectly smoothly.:D
One small deficiency in the procedure is that TSSplitter does not always produce good splits - at least it did not for my first and only attempt. The second of three disks did not play back properly when I tested the m2ts file in MPC. Therefore, as noted in the original procedure, one should open TSSplit, set the type of media, take note of the time of the various split points and then shut down TSSplitter and use TSRemux to adjust the beginning and ending trim points to create the number of needed disks.
That being said, however, I tried HDBDsplit and it worked like a charm.
Thanks to glen8 for the procedure and DonCarlos for posting the link.

If that is the case than the problem is simply a muxing bug in Tsmuxer. Thanks for the info.

There is a step-by-step procedure somewhere on this FORUM.
It has been so long - I don't remember where?

If you come across US edition of Galapagos HD DVD then this is DEFINITELY badly done disk where video is ONLY 29.97 (with no flags, that what it is)
vc1conv only messes it up, so can not be used in this guide

Hi, Interesting thread, just what I was looking for (page two of thread, Tony1M). However, I have tried the command prompt exactly as Tony1M stated but still cannot get vc1conv (v0.4)to work. I just get the "usage: vc1conv <infile> <outfile>" message. I have tried this with two seperate mpv files, demuxed using evodemux (both as is, and renamed extensions to vc1). The demuxed files certainly play fine in powerdvd, so the files are ok. Thoughts appreciated.

I did all my HD-DVDs like this:
demux : eac3to
mux : tsMuxeR
piece of cake....
Hmm...what kind of command line are you using for the audio on eac3to?
When I made my audio file using eac3to with the .flac extension and the -libav I couldnt get it to load the flac file in TsMuxer (gui version). TsMuxer reports that Its not a supported format when you try to load it.
(eg, eac3to d:\ 1) 3: "c:\temp\audio.flac" -libav) was the command line I used in eac3to.
If using ac3 with the -libav switch , it makes a audio.ac3 file, which loads fine in TsMuxer (gui version) but the video is pixelated to hell when I play it back in media player.
(eg, eac3to d:\ 1) 3: "c:\temp\audio.ac3" -libav)
The other thing I tired was using eac3to to create a video file, and .ac3 audio file, then us mkvmerge (gui) to mux them, i get a single file (for example, movie.mkv.)
That video plays perfectly with audio in sync and the picture is excellent. but now my problem is how to I create the blu-ray structure from the single .mkv file?
I tried using TsMuxer (gui version) and loaded the movie.mkv and tried to create a blu ray structure but got the error "Reading buffer overflow. Possible container streams are not syncronized. Please, verify stream fps. File name: C:\Temp\jacksac3.mkv"
so now im not sure what to do...
Ill try some other things, but hopefully can point me in the right direction.
soo......I guess my question is, whats your eac command line look like to rip your audio so you dont have to take that extra step with mkvmerge?

If I were you, I'd rip the movie using ToNMT to your hard drive with AnyDVD running in the background. It can rip HDDVD's to .ts or m2ts format. Then use ClownBD to convert it to an ISO file. Then rip it to a BD!

Is there a readme file or procedure file on converting HDDVD to blu ray using Clown BD ? I would like to give that a try , the other methods I have seen here look to crazy , if clown bd can do it all in one step after I rip the hddvd to my hard drive using anydvdhd that would be great!

Thanks , I'll give it a try , I have never used clown bd before. I have been using dvdfab6 bluray to pull the main movie and reduce it to 25gb so never bothered to load clown bd ... but when I saw it may be a simple way to convert my hd dvd library I got excited , because the other ways I have seen to do this seem way too difficult .
