Well, I really do not see any clear answers to these questions, so I will post. Does AnyDVD-HD replace AnyDVD in every way in addition to adding HD support? If so, will there be a time where AnyDVD will no longer be supported, updated and will it be discontinued? I mean, why have two separate products if both do the same basic functions i.e. dycrypt basic DVDs. How long will AnyDVD continue to be updated? Will the upgrade to AnyDVD-HD continue to exist to the same point in time when AnyDVD ceases to exist?

Yes, they are exactly the same program, in fact.

No (unless Slysoft ever goes under, and it hasn't so far, so . . .)

They are exactly the same program. Your license key determines what features are available to you.

Please look at our homepage. Two products: AnyDVD & AnyDVD HD. Sold separately. Bot supported. Nothing will be replaced by anything.
This isn't sooo difficult to understand, is it?
The only magic - for reasons of simplicity, they are the same download file. Just like PowerDVD, PowerDVD Gold, PowerDVD premium ... whatever.
Just like Vista Home, Home Premium, Ultimate... all the same installation DVD. The key you use makes the difference.

To be precise - they are *two* different products which happen to share the same distribution binary.

I apologize for posting my questions here, as well as in the 6123 thread, but part of the confusion which is not addressed in the "history" of the update is making it clear if this update will disable the AnyDVD function if someone like me with only a DVD-RW drive purchases the $30 upgrade. I'm pretty sure you guys wouldn't do that, but it should be addressed.
Also, I would recommend that you make it clear in the 6132 Download History link that existing AnyDVD users will need to purchase a $30 upgrade to enable the DVD-HD capability...especially since this sort of flies in the face of "lifetime upgrades."
I understand this is a whole new product, so I don't have a problem with the $30, but I think you have enough good will built up with all of us, that you don't need to shy away from the essential information stated up front. I actually needed to check on AfterDawn.com to try and figure out what was going on, as I didn't even know you had a forum here. I think it is slightly cheesy that you list the Valentine coupon code on the front page, but then don't honor it for this upgrade......I mean...come on....think of the good will giving a $5 spot for us early bird upgraders who don't even have a HD drive yet! :-)
Having used all of your programs for years, I have been in the habit of just getting the update, and checking the history to see what's new...so I think making the situation a lot more clear in that History link will save you a lot of grief.

If you only have a DVD-RW then there is no need to buy AnyDVD HD. You would not be able to use the new functionality. You need an HD burner for that.

a lot of time and effort as been put into this, a upgrade fee is not much to ask , support the program so the authors can support you you know it will be worth that bit extra .
for me i will be paying $79 as i dont own anydvd as soon as paypal is running :agree:
the price isnt an issue here the support of the program is , how often does anydvd update , how many movies cant you back up with the standard version:disagree:

Just bought the update. Don't even own a HD DVD yet. Am I Stupid ?
Don't think so. Bought my AnyDVD license in 2003 and it has served me very well so I thought that $30 in upgrade fee equals 8 dollars per year. And i payed it as an upgrade fee. When i do get a HD DVD ( and believe me i will as soon as their are any decent internal ones available ) I can just continue using the same tools as always.
Now I am just waiting for the GameJackal announcement 8)

I do have to say that as it is less than a month since I purchased the full Slysoft package, I am disappointed that I have to pay another $30 for a new keycode. I have installed the upgrade and it does seem to have a few useful improvements, but I can't even get a free 14day trial of this new DVD-HD.

Delete your license key info from the registry, that should give you 21 days of trial I think. Be sure to save your key file in case you opt not to buy the HD version. Then just reinstall the key.

I wasn't suggesting anyone should RIPOFF Slysoft, I was saying; Why pay for functions/ablilties you don't need? I happily paid for my version and fully support Slysoft also, if I didn't chances are I wouldn't be here trying to help others while I learn more about the software. I don't see Slysoft going broke and going out of business if I don't buy services from them that I didn't need in the first place.

When I logged online, I got the upgrade notice from Slysoft but when I went to the History, there's nothing there that explains you have to pay for the upgrade, a simple change in wording and an explaination of how in the version History would be helpful...Aka...to uprade, current users need to purchase a new keycode and an explanation of how and where. A little info for user on the need for an HD DVD RW drive would be helpful as well. For many of us, HD is still unknown territory (as are the requirements for making Anydvd HD a worthwhile purchase.

think it will be years before the HD-DVD is all that will be offered.
not to point bad fingers at SLYSOFT but the $30.00 upgrade

Really...30 bucks is WAY TOO MUCH?!?!?! What is wrong with you people?! The cost of an HD-DVD movie is 25-35 bucks. ONE MOVIE! So, an upgrade that gives you unlimited updates for life costing 30 bucks is too much?! Are you people crazy? I'm sorry, but, so many people seem to think it should be given away or cost 20 or less or whatever, but, Slysoft put effort into developing this. It wasn't like they woke up one day, slapped the "aacs removal code" together in an hour, and decided to rape consumers by overcharging for it. It cost them money to develop this technology. And you're all complaining that it costs the price of a movie to upgrade to this version. Give me a break.

30.00 was a fair trade I thought personally, I don't own a HD-DVD player or drive yet but didn't really know how long the upgrade offer was to last either so I just went on and upgraded, On my new build which is no major rush will have the hybrid player or one of each if needed So I seen pay now as an investment. As for the upgrade fee well that wasn't much due to the fact the time and resources that went into the new technology.

I can't speak for Slysoft on this issue but I can offer an opinion that it seems unlikely they'd charge again for BluRay. It's not Any HD-DVD, it's AnyDVD HD, so, it stands to reason that BluRay support would be included as an update to AnyDVD HD rather than an upgrade. Again, this is personal opinion.

Why do people get this point confused? They don't offer free up*GRADES* period. They offer free upDATES and there *IS* a difference. :) As for the 2050 date, that was explained before...they had to pick some arbitrary date. Do you REALLY think that's going to affect you? :)

An upgrade gives new functionality, such as adding HD support to AnyDVD. An update fixes issues with existing functionality. Look at it from the Windows perspective. An upgrade would be XP to Vista...not free. Updates come from Windows update and are free. See the difference?
As for the date, I forget the explanation as I really didn't care. I am quite sure I won't be using the product in 50 some odd years. :)

And what's going to prevent it from doing so? I'm sure we'll have moved beyond DVD and HD-DVD/BluRay by then, so, 50 years of updates will most likely reach end of life of those products and therefore AnyDVD HD won't need to be updated in 50 years. Hence, it'll still work.

What is the technical difference between an upgrade and update?
While this is meant to apply to another product, the following explanation suffices.
modified from http://financialsoft.about.com/od/softwaretitle1/f/upgradevupdate.htm
A. The difference between a software upgrade and a software update can be confusing.
A software update is made available by free download to customers as a fix for a bug in the software or it is a minor enhancement to the software. A software update is also sometimes called a patch, because it is applied over software that you already have installed.
A software upgrade is a purchase of a newer version of software you currently use. For example, if you currently use Anydvd and you bought and installed Anydvd HD, you’ve just upgraded your software.
And why did they have to pick a date? It's lifetime.
I'm guessing for legal reasons a date is required.
I doubt anyone will be using dvds in 2050 anyway.

Sweet! But that's my point exactly. In 50 years, will AnyDVD, even AnyDVD HD actually be necessary? Look at the last 50 years of computing and how far we've come. Can you honestly say that you can predict what the next 50 years will bring? I'm going out on a limb here and guessing that Windows won't be what we're using and that you'll have a hard time finding something for AnyDVD to actually RUN on. :) Maybe in emulation, but, you better stock up on drives between now and then. See if you can get one of those hardware mfg's to give you a 50 year warranty. BAHAHAHA. :D And do you think the physical media is going to last 50 years? They CLAIM it will, but, how do they REALLY know? They don't. Hence, I'm TRULY not worried about lifetime updates.

I remember years back when I was trying to figure out how to backup my DVD's. At first I tried a few of those bogus do-it-all DVD copiers and they did not do what they were supposed to do and it was'nt until I stumbled on AnyDVD on the Internet (I believe this was before CloneDVD was out) that I was happy with the results of the software. They have been with us thru Arccos and Ripguard and always manage to give us our fair rights to backup what we purchased. Slysoft should be commended for all their efforts and thats why it did not bother me at all sending $30 to support the new HD project before I am ready for it. The only way they can make new products (Blu Ray, etc..) is with our support...Show some support.

I upgraded as well. I don't have an XBox 360 HD-DVD player yet because it would be essentially pointless for me right now. I have an aging system [no, no, not an antique but a few years too old] that simply isn't worth upgrading [*sigh* can you say RDRAM?] so I'll need to build a new one and haven't done it yet.
Regardless, for all the use I've gotten out of Slysoft products [AnyDVD in particular] I feel my support is well worth it. As someone else has mentioned in the past... having owned AnyDVD since 2003 and it now only being a $30 upgrade cost... this is no big deal. Seeing people appreciating their work definitely helps a company want to further evolve a product, IMO.
Once I build a new system I'll grab an XBox 360 HD-DVD player and hook it up to my system and check it out with my HDTV TV/PC widescreen monitor and be ready enjoy my right to fair use :-)

Another person who doesn't understand *UPDATE* versus *UPGRADE*. They didn't just "add HD" to the end of the name. The HD functionality is COMPLETELY NEW. Why do you people not get it? Your FREE LIFETIME UPDATES are still valid for AnyDVD...the product YOU BOUGHT AND PAID FOR. NO ONE is forcing you to UPGRADE to AnyDVD HD. I can't speak for slysoft, but, I'm assuming they won't charge again for BluRay support. Nonetheless, I don't get why people are so worked up over "being forced" to pay for upgraded functionality. If they don't want to pay for it, then don't. But, don't complain that you can't get it for free. No one is stopping these people complaining from using the product they paid for AND getting updates for life. That is, updates for EXISTING functionality. AnyDVD is still there and still works as it always has. And when protections are tweaked and updated, AnyDVD will be updated, for free, to handle that. Is this really so hard to figure out? (No, I'm not yelling at you...just frustrated with people's "I expect everything for free" attitude)

I've heard arguments from both sides, that it should be free and shouldn't. Both make compelling arguments, so ultimately it comes down to if you don't like it, don't buy it, like you said SamuriHL.

The thing that gets me is that people feel like they're being robbed somehow. Like AnyDVD has all of a sudden been taken away from them and they're being FORCED into buying something new. HD technology is a new technology. It took time and money to develop AnyDVD HD's functionality. Why shouldn't they get paid for it? Why should it be given to people for free? How is not having that functionality unlocked hurting existing AnyDVD customers? They didn't have it a month ago, and now all of a sudden because it's there and they didn't get it for free, it somehow diminishes the AnyDVD purchase they made? I'm sorry, I just don't buy it. I see it as a lot of whining about not getting something for nothing. As I said before, 30 bucks is the cost of ONE movie. How much do you think AnyDVD HD will be used over the next few years? Is that functionality worth an upgrade? To me, and others, yes. If the answer is no, no harm no foul as far as I'm concerned. Keep using AnyDVD as if AnyDVD HD didn't exist and be happy.

This is the second or third time this company has done this to me and I am really getting tired of having to re-buy software that is suppose to have "FREE LIFETIME UPDATES".

Would you be gracious and explain to Forum Members exactly how this company (SlySoft) caused you to “Second or Third Time” re-buy software that is suppose to have "FREE LIFETIME UPDATES"?

I'm new to this this forum, a registered user of AnyDVD and CloneDVD2, and I fully agree with those who feel the $30 upgrade fee for the HD version is fair. It is new technology and, as others have stated, time, money and tremendous effort had to have gone into its development. The software has worked brilliantly for me since I purchased it last December, and the support for it is obviously first-rate. I will happily pay the $30 upgrade fee for the HD version if and when I need it. No big deal.

Blah, Blah, B;ah, Blah. Now that is out of my system. :D
Yes anydvd hd still gets updated to do the latest movies always has always will. anydvd HD is a new technology and allot has went into it to get it made and release. Anydvd is not a new technology so there is free updates for life, but and notice I said but anydvd hd is NEW technology and doesn't qualify as the same as it is built the same but yet different at the same time. anydvd hd is new technology and is bluray get developed and we must pay an upgrade my 30 or 40.00USD will go towards it due to the fact that it will be invauluable to me to have such technology. SamuriHL I agree with you 100% and have known you about a year or so now from cdfreaks as well as allot of others that are here.

Thanks for that. I probably could have been more diplomatic in my response to them, but, I don't work for Slysoft nor am I a moderator here so I'm taking liberty. :D They tend to forget that there's a business behind the product and developers need to eat. I'm a software developer, so, I'm probably slightly biased on the subject, but, they put real effort into developing AnyDVD HD and should get paid for it. If we have to pay for BluRay, then we have to pay for BluRay. I agree that it's absolutely invaluable functionality for some of us. For those that don't need or want it, you're still good to go with "classic" AnyDVD. Anyway, thanks for the reply!

Well look at it this way hd part a one time fee people gripe. Some of these gripers I bet use 1 click dvd and that is an annual fee there. Just my 2˘. DNC has free updates but not these so called upgrades. It's a matter of making some money to survive. If you want free there is that out there if not just wait?

There is that, too. If you want a free solution to HD, there are some out there but they are, IMO, a royal pain to use from what I've seen. AnyDVD HD makes it REALLY easy. And as such, it provides value.

if you don't mind me asking.

On the disc it came on? :) AnyDVD HD can modify the disc in memory without having to rip it anywhere. At this point I'm interested in playback vs copying. Some day we'll get to copying.

Copying to HDD = backing up.

Yes, I do. Backups, especially with how much these discs currently cost, will be important once the writing technology is cheaper. I wasn't implying illegally copying a disc. :)

That'll be nice. At the moment I'm trying to look at my budget to see how I can rebuild one of my media PC's with some snazzy new hardware. That may be a while though. I was lucky enough to get the HD-DVD drive for my b-day, so, I can't be greedy. :) In the meantime I'll build up an HD library. I also need to get a new TV. I want a 56" Samsung DLP 1080p, but, my plans for buying it got screwed by having to buy a new car last month. Ugh. So, money's tight but I can be patient.

Try a projector - it's more fun.
SamuriHL
20th February 2007, 22:58
A projector would be ok, and my living room certainly COULD support such a concept, but, it'd be a ROYAL nightmare to set up the cabling required for such a system in my house. For now I want to get either LCD or the Samsung DLP. And since LCD hasn't hit the price point I need to be in, DLP is it for now.

You can hide the cables behind plastic "cable hiders" - you don't even notice them. Or if you have a drop ceiling even better.

Ok I'm thinking of downloading HD-DVD to my computer, the question that I have is what is the best way to just download the Files, what hardware or software do I need and which one is the cheapest.
