Did anybody get this to work using only one installation? I know a couple of the guys were hard at work in another thread and managed to get it to work if you installed both 7.3 and 8.x but then the thread seemed to have been hijacked with other discussions... So just checking to see if anyone got it to work similiar to the way it was before the 1730 patch! TIA!

At this point, no, I am unaware of anyone discovering a way to play HD-DVDs with only PowerDVD8 installed.

Thanx for the quick response. The main (ONLY) reason I use PDVD is its intergration with the My Movies. Have you trie the Arcsoft TotalMedia Theater? It seems to have all the functionality of PDVD (BD Live, High RES audio, nVidia PureVideo HD, etc..) plus it does HD-DVD straight out of the box!
The good news is the newest My Movies seems to integrate vey nicely with it. The only question (for me) is will it support high res audio over HDMI w/ the upcoming Auzentech daughter card!

I tried Arcsoft TMT and hated it. It froze up playing SD DVDs and I had issues with the UI where it was displayed very oddly. I dumped it very quickly. I need a media player that handles SD DVD, HD-DVD, and BD solidly. TMT didn't do that for me, sadly. Cyberlink really needs some competition to put a fire under their ***.

That I have no idea about. It would definitely be nice, though. :)

It's one of those things I keep meaning to look into. I'm on vacation next week so maybe I'll have some time to look into it again while beating Mass Effect. What needs to be done is figuring out what files and registry settings are needed from 7 and make an install package that drops the files into 8's directory, registers them, and imports the registry keys. It's a fair amount of work but entirely doable.

Yawn. That was easy.
Install PowerDVD8, upgrade to latest patch.
Copy the HDDVD_X.IMP file to your PowerDVD8 folder
Copy js32.dll and deskband32.dll files to your PowerDVD8 folder
Edit the CLDShowX.ini file to comment out the HD DVD nav line
Copy the following files from 4102's navFilter folder:
CLHDSPDecoder.dll
hddvd_logo.png
HDDVDAdvNav.dll
HDDVDNav.ax
HDDVDNavi.dll
regsvr32 HDDVDNav.ax
Bob's your uncle, Betty's your aunt, and you have HD DVD playback in PowerDVD8 without having PowerDVD7 installed. At least, it's working for me. If it doesn't work for you, let me know and I'll see what I can do.

Where do you copy the files from
Second question
Copy the following files from 4102's navFilter folder:
CLHDSPDecoder.dll
hddvd_logo.png
HDDVDAdvNav.dll
HDDVDNav.ax
HDDVDNavi.dll
Where do this files get copied to
SamuriHL

1) From PowerDVD7 4102 directory (only for the dll's. the IMP obviously has to come from the PowerDVD8 beta and has been posted all over the place)
2) This one should be obvious...to the PowerDVD8/NavFilter folder

Thanks for the quick work. A couple of questions:
1. So using this method do we have to insta PDVD 7 and then remove it (to get all the files)? or can we get the files directly from the install folder?
2. Can you please post either a CRC32 or MD5 list of the files/dlls you used so they can be used to copare with our own?
Thank you!

you have to install pdvd 7 which you should have done if you already did the hack prior but if you didnt thats what you need to do also Samuri explained on his post what files you need from 4102

Yea, just get the files I listed from the 4102 build of PowerDVD 7. After you copy them off, you can uninstall it. I'd then do a fresh install of PowerDVD8 (only a recommendation, not absolutely necessary) and install the files like I said in my post above. The md5 hashes aren't necessary. All the files come from 4102 build except the IMP file. That you must acquire on your own (not hard to find) from an older version of the HD DVD hack.

Can I install Powerdvd 7 if I currently have 8 installed

im sure the hack you found contain files from the beta of powerdvd 8 , youll need a certain file from that and the rest from powerdvd 7 4102 just follow the steps that Samuri gave and youll be fine , dont cut corners cause then it probably wont work

It is not sufficient. Those files do not work. You must get the files from build 4102 and follow the steps I laid out. Otherwise you'll run into problems.
Yes, you can install 7 quite easily. Until yesterday, that's what most of us had to do anyway to get HD DVD functionality to work in 8. ALL the files I detailed are important, including js32.dll and deskband32.dll. Without those, PowerDVD8 will likely crash when you go to play an HD DVD.

Yeah ,but as I recall there were multiple versions of the IMP file floating around. I myself had two, so unless there is a quick way to verify which is the correct one (i.e. which is the version from the beta PDVD 8.0) the MD5 hash makes it easy for everyone to figuer out if they have the right file or not... If not they keep looking in google land... ;)

CRC32 is 542B50F6. I don't really see how this helps. All you need to do is get the old HD DVD hack which is ridiculously easy to find. It contains the right file. Why screw around looking for the "right" file when it's so easy to find?

Thanx! It seems I already have the right file ready to go. :)
BTW: In the old hack you needed to run a .reg file to add the HD-DVD type to windows for double clikcing/auto run... IS the reg file still needed?
TIA!

I just tried this on my primary Vista x64 system, and PDVD8 comes up in File Mode. Strange. BTW, when I looked in the PDVD7 directory, there was a DeskBand64.dll, not DeskBand32.dll. I tried using that file, same result. I pulled a DeskBand32.dll from my laptop (which is Vista 32-bit), same result. I did remove the comment from the CLDShowX.ini after I removed PDVD7 from my system. Same result.
Can you provide me the file details of DeskBand32.dll (file size, build, creation date, etc.)?

Damnit, I thought I posted in this thread that x64 doesn't work. Someone already tried it. If you get it to work, post how. But, I do not have x64 so I have absolutely no way of working on this problem. Also, I'm leaving in the morning for a few days. No net access where I'm going.

I just got it to work. Backed up the files you mentioned. I had to copy the DeskBand32.dll from my 32-bit Vista machine. I could not use the DeskBand64.dll file. I also had to completely remove PDVD7 and PDVD8. Then I ran CCLeaner and had it scan and fix the registry. After that I simply installed PDVD8, then 1730b patch, and copied over the files you mentioned. Then I commented out the HDDVDNAV.AX line in CLDShowX.ini. I was just able to get PDVD8 to open in Disk Mode with Stardust. I'm going to test with some of my other HD-DVD's.
SamuriHL
1st July 2008, 22:58
Sweet. I hope it continues to work. I'll let the person know who was having problems with it and see if it works for him, as well. Thanks for testing that.

I have tested on both of my x64 Vista systems and all play Stardust, Feast, Bladerunner, and 300. I have other HD-DVD's, but I have not tested them as a sample of 4 should be plenty.
The key is to completely remove all instances of PDVD (7 and 8, and use CCleaner to clean the registry,) get the deskband32.dll from a 32-bit installation of PDVD7 4102, and comment out the HDDVDNAV.AX line in CLDShowX.ini.

I did, shadow07. I really don't know what the problem is. My system is damn near a fresh install of Vista Ultimate x64. It's a couple months old. I've kept this system extremely light in terms of software installs. I simply cannot get it to work and I followed the instructions to a "T". I've even been given the "working" files from someone else to double-check I didn't have the wrong files. It still fails to work. I can be a complete moron at times but I know I am not screwing up in this situation.
I also know another Vista Ultimate x64 user who also followed the directions perfectly and cannot get the single v8 install "fix" working. They also followed the exact directions.
I spent too much time getting annoyed at trying to get it to work and having it fail. The parallel install method works so I'm sticking with it.

Yup, it does indeed fail for some people. No idea why. As long as you're good with the parallel install method, it's all good. I'm happy with the single install method myself. At the end of the day, you just wanna watch your movies in peace. :)

And I too had the same issue when Samuri and James were commenting on the process. If you want to give it another try, I would do the following:
1. Remove all instances of PDVD.
2. Run CCleaner, specifically the Registry Scan. Have it backup and fix what it found wrong.
3. Install PDVD8 as previously noted.
I can tell you that I couldn't get PDVD8 with the HD-DVD hack (taking the PDVD7 HD-DVD components and putting them into a PDVD8 installation) would not work until I ran CCleaner to remove the stale Cyberlink entries. I HAD to get PDVD8 with HD-DVD working as you cannot use both, PDVD7 and PDVD8, if you also run My Movies.

I'm just going to say this doesn't work for me under Vista 64 bit edition.
I'm using Vista Ultimate 64 bit edition Sp 1.
1. I uninstalled Powerdvd 8
2. I uninstalled Powerdvd 7
3. I deleted all Cyberlink directories
4. I ran CCleaner's registry cleaner several times in a row to remove everything
5. I rebooted
6. I installed the full install from Powerdvd 8, v.1730
7. I ran the 1830 update
8. From the files, I saved before uninstalling, I copied the following files into my navfilter folder:
CLHDSPDecoder.dll
hddvd_logo.png
hddvdadvnav.dll
hddvdnav.ax
hddvdnavi.dll
9. I copied over the following files into my Powedvd 8 directory:
Deskband32.dll
hddvd_x.imp
js32.dll
9. I registered hddvdnav.ax
10. I edited cldshowx.ini (put a semicolon in front of the hd-dvd line). I saved
11. I let Anydvd HD scan V for Vendetta HD-DVD
12. I ran Powerdvd 8 and selected my hd-dvd drive
I get

Where did you get the file "hddvd_x.imp" from? If you didn't get it from the PDVD8 Beta, then that could be the source of your issue.
Also, your audio card driver didn't crash before you began to play a movie? And I assume that you set PDVD8's audio correctly. I have issues where the ATI video driver will crash and I have to reboot my system in order for PDVD8 to not crash itself.
I don't know what else to say. I have been able to successfully get PDVD8 working with the hack on two different systens (one nVidia and one ATI.)

No. And the hd-dvd plays in Powerdvd 7.3 Ultra perfectly fine.

What's to set? For computer playback, I have it set to 6 channel and "no effect" in output mode. It's not as though I'm seeing tons of audio configuration options. Should I be seeing something more than that?
I have issues where the ATI video driver will crash and I have to reboot my system in order for PDVD8 to not crash itself.
No. I definitely don't have that issue with the 8.7 beta Catalyst drivers. I'm also using a Radeon 4870 currently. I will probably be switching to a 4870x2 in mid to late August.

Somewhere along the way they changed PowerDVD7. If it detects a 64-bit OS it installs deskband64.dll instead of deskband32.dll. You cannot use deskband64.dll with PowerDVD8 even if you have a 64-bit OS.
Honestly, with the removal of the v7 Ultra updates from the CyberLink website I think they may have discontinued updates for the software. I am bothered that we received no EOL notice, however.
Where did you get the file "hddvd_x.imp" from? If you didn't get it from the PDVD8 Beta, then that could be the source of your issue.
Yeah, we all have the v8 beta file.

I've had the issues with PowerDVD8 using both an NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT and an ATI Radeon HD 4870 with the Catalyst 8.7 drivers. I think the video card and drivers can be ruled out.
One of these days when I'm in a masochistic mood I'll try doing this all over again from scratch.

I had no problems using it with Vista 64. I followed the directions listed above. I used a fresh install of powerdvd 8, I upgraded it to current patch.
I then copied all the files from navfilter directory listed above, the files needed from the main directory listed above. The files I took, came from a current 7.3 latest patched install .
I then copied the hddvd_X.imp from the original HD-HACK. The key is, as pointed out above, to use the hdnav_x.imp file from the orginal HD-HACK. Then it all works, I can provide version numbers and file sizes if asked.
The last step of course as pointed out above, was to, comment out the one line from cldshowx.ini. Walla instant hd-dvd playback.

I think it's fairly apparent that I used the exact same process.
Also, it should be noted that I don't really care since both 7.3.4102a.0 and 8.0.1830.50 work fine for me.

I'm not using LCPM over HDMI for computer playback. I'm using an Auzentech X-FI Prelude soundcard. I'm not going out to an amp. I was just trying to not need Powerdvd 7 Ultra installed on my system, so for testing purposes I wasn't doing anything else.

For some reason it doesn't seem to work for everyone. I don't get why. I don't have x64 so I can't test it there. I wish I had a solution for it.

Yes, PDVD7 does use a different version of deskband.dll. I pulled deskband32.dll from a PDVD7 4120 install on my only 32-bit Vista installation, as the 64-bit version did not work. From what I can tell PDVD8 does not check to see if you are running a 32-bit or 64-bit OS. This does work in a 64-bit version of Vista. I have it running on two different installs. I don't know what else to say.
As for the patience remark, it was simply a jab. I like the fact you don't take crap from people as a mod, and have a firm grip over things here. :policeman:

The hand of fate or some such nonsense is messing with me. I have a joke with many of my friends that when the gods get bored they use me as a court jester. Meddling with my life can be enjoyable, I guess. :p
I'll figure out the issue. It'll just not be right now. At some point, rest assured, I will figure out what the problem is! :)

Not a problem. I can be amazingly impatient and at other times I can be too patient when I shouldn't. It all depends on the situation and my mood. I am who I am. I'm no different here than I am in real life. I have a low tolerance for idiocy.

No. You must create an .iso and mount it in a virtual drive program.

The HD DVD hack isn't to allow playback from folders! It's to allow playback of HD DVD discs at all. :) PowerDVD 8 Ultra removed that functionality. We strive to restore it. However, folder playback has been gone for a long time. As Webslinger said, you need to create ISOs and mount them.

i will be posting a zip file on my webserver for those who have vista 64. It will only contain the files that are needed to get HD-HACK working w/ the latest Pdvd 8 patch. You will have to follow SamuriHL directions to install it, and register the appropriate file. I can not remember all the files, I am at the end of a 14 hour day at work tonight.

It woult be best if you posted your ISO mounting issues with VCD over in the appropriate forum. (http://forum.slysoft.com/forumdisplay.php?f=21) Please post specific information; what OS are you running, what is the version number of the apps you are using, steps you are attempting, specific error messages, etc.

I know you have what you need. Take your IMP file that we've all had since day one, and then you need to use all the files from the latest PowerDVD 7. No different from all the previous releases.

After hitting a few snafus, I'm able to get HD DVD playback to work under Vista Ultimate 64bit. BTW, I'm using the 2021a patch. I had initially overlooked the step to copy js32.dll, and was unable to get the HD-DVD menus and configuration tab working. But once I dropped the js32.dll into the C:\program files (x86)\cyberlink\powerdvd8 directory...everything works as expected. ***Thanks SamuraiHL***

I'm glad you got it working. Just an FYI, I've given up on version 8 and gone back to 7. It gives me the same quality as 8 and less of a hassle. Plus 7 is lighter on the system resources than 8. All in all, I regret purchasing 8 at all. But if it's working for you and you're happy with it, that's awesome.

Well, after all my efforts, it looks like there's one glitch with HD DVDs and the latest PowerDVD 8 update. I'm able to play HD DVD discs, but when I go to the configuration preferences, the HD DVD tab is missing. The strangest part is that HD DVD discs continue to play even after the tab is "hidden". Has Cyberlink built in an HD DVD "kill switch" into the 2021a build?

PDVD8 does not support HD-DVD playback. The only way you are able to get it back is because of the PDVD7 codecs you have placed into your PDVD8 installation. It does not add any UI features that you can enable or disable. You would have to figure out how PDVD7 stores these settings (i.e. Registry or INI file) and change them manually yourself.

A thousand thank yous. I was starting to think I was going crazy. Sure enough, the HD DVD or Blu-ray tabs only appear while a supported disc is playing.

No problem at all. Our aim was to bring as much HD DVD functionality back to 8 as possible. I think we did a pretty good job on that one. :) It's not perfect, but, it's as close as you're going to get. IMO, it's just not worth it. I've given up on 8 completely and uinstalled it. I've gone back to 7 and am very happy with that decision.

I'm trying to get this to work with 8.0.2214, but can't seem to figure it out. I've loaded the files from the .rar in the requisite places and registered the .ax successfully. PowerDVD goes to play the HD-DVD, starts to load, and then crashes to the desktop.
Has anybody gotten this to work with the latest version?

SamuriHL, how's HD-DVD support is 2217a? I just rebuilt my machine and I'm going from PDVD 8.0.1513 to 2217a. Have you confirmed that the standard method works with this version? Thanks!

I'll be honest...I haven't been using PowerDVD 8 in quite a while. And I certainly haven't tried to add HD DVD support to it in a while. I've basically moved on to TMT at this point. All I can say is try it. If I get a lot of reports of it not working, I may try and see what I can do about it.

I like TMT a lot for BDs and have been using it instead of PowerDVD7 or PowerDVD8. I haven't really tested it with HD-DVDs. I did have an issue with SD DVDs that I need to experiment more with.

I've replaced my use of PowerDVD with it at this point. So yea, I like it quite a bit. I haven't done extensive testing with HD DVD's and did have one that wouldn't play, but, since building a new HTPC and updating to the latest build, I've had no problem at all. I really do like it quite a bit.
