View Full Version : Which Drive? DVD±RW, Blu-ray Reader, Blu-ray Burner ?

For most people it's easier/cheaper to buy a 1Tb HD, load up AnyDVD-HD and then just copy/paste the content to the drive.
Hmmm... good idea. I'm guessing we'd only need a BluRay reader for that, not a burner -- right?

I'm buying a new laptop soon, so I'm trying to decide if I should just get (A) the normal DVD drive/burner, or (B) the BD Reader drive, or (C) the BD Burner drive. Anyone have any thoughts or advice?

Thanks! :)

I'll be buying a new laptop soon, but I'm not sure which drive to get.

On my current laptop I can only backup regular DVDs. But since we recently got a PS3 (w/ Blu-ray of course) I'd like to start buying and backing up Blu-ray discs as well, using the new laptop.

I'm just not sure if it's the right time yet. Should I get a BD reader and/or burner with the new laptop? Or hold off, then get an external reader/burner later, when things progress a bit and get cheaper.

Here's the pricing:

A) DVD±R DL / DVD±RW / DVD-RAM Drive [included in price]
B) Blu-ray Disc™ Read Only Drive [add $150.00]
C) Blu-ray Disc™ Read and Write Drive [add $300.00]

Any thoughts or advice?

Thanks!

Note: due to the current high price of blank BD discs it might be best to just keep a backup on a hard drive, rather than burn it, but I'm not sure.

Whatever you do, don't get a Matshita.

I'd get the writer now. The $300 upgrade cost is much less then what a new writer would cost right now (About $400 - 500). Of course, maybe in 2 years it may be cheaper.

Webslinger: What's wrong with the Matshida/panasonic drives? I had considered getting one for my laptop at some point. Right now I've got an LG GGC-H20L in my desktop. (GGC is a varient that doesn't read HD-DVD .. grr. stupid mistake but I had like $250 in Bestbuy gift cards to burn and wanted a BD writer. hah)

It's upto you on how much money you want to spend really. Drive prices and media prices will come down over time. They've come down lots in the past year. But from your other post (I think) it was only a $300 add-on vs a $150 add-on for a BD writer vs a read-only. It'll probably be 2 or 3 years before BD-Writers for laptops come down to under $150, so if you wanna wait that long then go with the reader, but if you think you're gonna want to write in the next 2 or so years pay the extra $150 now. Otherwise you'll end up spending like $400 to swap out the drive later.

16. Help! I'm having problems playing discs from other regions with my Matshita drive! Why?

Matshita (Panasonic oem) burners should really be avoided. They are cheap junk (which is probably why some laptop companies love these drives), die easily, and also suffer from region coding issues. Click this (http://club.cdfreaks.com/showpost.php?p=637240&postcount=2)
