I am attempting to use an Xbox 360 HD DVD player and play HD DVDs on a Quad core pc with a Nvidia 6800 hooked up to a monitor via DVI. Is this possible for the newest AnyDVD? I heard that it decrypts the HD DVD so it can play back at these conditions, is that true? If so how would I go about testing it?

Using AnyDVD HD, yes. If you already own AnyDVD you need to upgrade which involves purchasing the AnyDVD HD option. The AnyDVD HD option extends the capabilities of the software so that it also handles HD-DVDs and BluRay discs.

You can download AnyDVD HD and try it for 21 days. If you have already used the 21 day trial you cannot do so again. Take a look at the AnyDVD HD forum and you'll see that the software works.

I tried using AnyDVD HD which I believe is version 6.4.7.6
I get the error:
Playback stopped because your graphics driver is incompatible. Please make sure your graphics driver meets the minimum requirements.

AnyDVD says:
Summary for drive G: (AnyDVD 6.4.7.6)
TOSHIBA DVD/HDX807616 MC08 10/03/06
Drive (Hardware) Region: 1

Media is a HD DVD.
Booktype: hd-dvd (version 3), Layers: 2 (opposite)
Size of first Layer: 6321664 sectors (12347 MBytes)
Total size: 12643328 sectors (24694 MBytes)
Video HD DVD label: THE_ITALIAN_JOB
Media is AACS protected!
Removed AACS copy protection!

What could be wrong? Could it be the HD DVD that I am trying to play? I know that it works on a Laptop with an HDCP compatible video card.

The HD DVD I am trying to play is "The Italian Job". I have 5 others that I can try if you need me to.

It looks like it is trying to play but stops. I get a black screen like it started the movie right before it gives me the error. What program do you suggest I use to play the HD DVDs? Currently I use Cyberlink PowerDVD 8.

Make sure that you are running the latest drivers for your videocard. If you aren't then you need to update. The problem is between PowerDVD8, your videocard, and your videocard drivers. This is unrelated to AnyDVD HD, itself.

I believe I am running the latest graphics driver from Nvidia. I just did a reformat about 2 weeks ago and installed the newest one they had for the 6 series cards. I am going to try to use the program WinDVD now and I'll see how it goes. Thanks for the quick responses.

Edit: It seemed that there was an update for my graphics card made available 5 days ago. I am installing that along with WinDVD to see if it works.

I have no idea how well a GeForce 6xxx series card will work with HD-DVD & BluRay playback if at all. The root of your problem may be the videocard and not the drivers. It's below the requirements for PowerDVD8. Refer here: http://www.cyberlink.com/multi/products/main_1_en_US.html.

I also have a laptop and desktop with old ATI Radeon 9600 and 9800 which give the same error. I can work around with Nero Showtime but playback is not smooth (both P4 3.2) . If you already have a Quad core PC then the best bet is to replace your video card to something in the list.

How did you do your workaround with Nero Showtime? Can you guide me through that? I do have Nero Showtime installed on my computer.
Right now I don't care which software it will take to play it (as long as there is a trial version I can try first), I just want it to play.

PDVD 8 does not play HD-DVD, they took that out. You have to either hack PDVD 8 to play them or use PDVD 7.3 or some other POS software player.

Buy a cheap 8x or 9x Nvidia or cheap 4x ATI card as well.

The Geforce 6800 series doesn't have the hardware to accelerate vc-1 or h.264, but since you have a quad-core you should be able to watch them with software decoding. Powerdvd 8 may be complaining that your videocard doesn't have hardware acceleration for those codecs. You can download a trial of Arcsoft TMT from download.com, its the .113 version and give it a try. If that doesn't work, as a last resort you can always rip and remux to mkv and use MPC-HC or another directshow player.

Good point and I lost track of the HD-DVD part in dealing with the problem. Regardless of the problem the HD-DVD won't play in PowerDVD8. WinDVD or TMT are the alternatives. The OEM versions of PowerDVD7 now have 6 channel audio so at least that isn't as crippled as it used to be if it can be had.

Buy a cheap 8x or 9x Nvidia or cheap 4x ATI card as well.

For video playback all the ATI Radeon HD 4xxx cards that have been released so far are great for media playback including HD-DVD/BD. If gaming isn't a concern I'd go with the low end ATI 4xxx card.

I'm actually wanting to stick with my 6800 because it has the ability to play games still my dad won't get me a new card just yet.

I tried WinDVD, same error, I think I posed it above. I will try out the last program that you guys said and let you know.

I have a ATI X1650 laying around. That is HDCP compatible. Is that better than the 6800 card I have now?

I have a version of ArcSoft TotalMedia Player. I get sound from my HD DVD but no video. What could be the cause of this?

You may not end up having a choice about updating your video card. Check out the system requirements: http://www.arcsoft.com/public/software_title.asp?ProductID=3&dyContent=LANG_REQ.

Requirements

For TotalMedia Theatre with Blu-ray and HD DVD playback:

Windows XP SP2/Vista 32 SP1
Intel Pentium EE 3.2 GHz, Intel Core Duo, or equivalent; AMD Athlon 64 or equivalent
120 MB free hard disk space
512 MB RAM (1 GB recommended)
Blu-ray or HD DVD drive
NVIDIA GeForce 8500 and above, or AMD(ATI) HD2400 and above.
256 MB graphics card or above
HDCP compliant display for digital output (HDMI connection); TV or VGA monitor for analog output

Also, I did try to find a download link. I can't find a download for the trial version on their site. I always had trouble but now I literally cannot find any download links and the website says the latest update patch is v2.1.6.120. I have 2.1.6.125 installed and that was the trial version they had for download. I'm baffled.

Even WinDVD has a minimum requirement of an NVIDIA GeForce 7600 but recommends the 8400. You may get away with the ATI X1650 since the minimum is the ATI 1600. Playback will likely be anything but stellar, however.

Arcsoft took down all the links for TMT and TME trials, The only one left is on download.com I think the .125 patch link still works.

Nero Showtime 4 from Nero 8 can playback BD/HD with plugin. Looks like this program did not check what video card driver you have before playing so I can start HDDVD disc play right away. Of course playback is bad in my P4.

Thank you, Nero Showtime 4 worked fine without lagging. So what is the point of newer software blocking playback on older GPUs?

The newer GPUs can do decoding themselves rather than forcing the CPU to do it. Offloading the decoding to the GPU will result in better results.

Limiting the cards supported means playback should be smoother because the cards are newer and have acceleration. It also means less work for them getting all cards to work nicely. Lastly, the videocard companies probably love the situation because it means more sales for them, as well.
