View Full Version : [Resolved] AnyDVD + HD PVR = BSOD

I can't get both installed on the same PC without a BSOD. Once I install AnyDVD, no matter what I do I can't enable the HD PVR w/o a blue screen.
So far the only fix I've found is to reinstall Vista.

It's a component capture device.

Not nearly enough info to offer suggestions, but I have Vista 32-bit and AnyDVD HD with the Hauppage HD-PVR and have no recording or playback issues...in fact they reside on my primary HTPC. Not sure where your conflict(s) may be, but AnyDVD and the Hauppage can co-exist together.

System:
ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe
9950 X4 (2.1 ghz)
2 GB OCZ 6400
ATI 3650 512mb
Vista x86
M780
HVR-1600 (x2)
HD PVR
LG BR/HDDVD Combo
Things I've tried:
First go:
- install AnyDVD on existing system -> reboot -> BSOD before windows loads
- safe mode, uninstall AnyDVD -> reboot -> BSOD
Second go:
- clean install Vista, install AnyDVD (note before HD PVR and HVR1600 drivers are installed) -> reboot -> everything is fine -> install HVR1600 driver -> fine -> install HD PVR driver -> BSOD
- safe mode -> uninstall HD PVR driver -> reboot -> fine -> install HD PVR driver -> BSOD
- disconnect HD PVR -> reboot -> fine -> uninstall AnyDVD -> reboot -> fine -> install HD PVR and driver -> BSOD
Third go:
- clean install Vista -> install all HW drivers -> fine -> install AnyDVD -> BSOD
Fourth go:
- clean install Vista -> install all HW drivers -> fine -> disconnect HD PVR (leaving driver installed) -> install AnyDVD -> fine -> reboot -> fine -> connect HD PVR -> BSOD
Note:
- The HD PVR driver in these 1-3 was the 1.0.3.53 beta, and for 4 version 1.1 was used.
- 3/4 go were both used stable state for a week before attempting the final step.
Suggestions?

Looks like we were posting at the same time. Might try moving the card since nothing else is working. You might also try Vista 64bit if you have it.
about all I can say is make sure you have the latest drivers and application versions installed. You might also try installing them in the opposite order, like if you setup the card and PVR software first this time try to install AnyDVD, clone drive etc first.
You could also try moving the card to a different slot though that is really one of those "nothing else is working" kinda things.

I forgot to note in my previous post that I've tried plugging it into different USB ports as well.

I have a Hauppage 850 installed in my HTPC and have never got a BSOD running XP Home SP3 with all slysoft software except for Game Jackal. ensure the usb is 2.0 capable is my thinking, strikes me as a device management problem in Windows.

Yea, it's an amazing piece of hardware, too. :) I just got one in September and I've been LOVING it ever since. With the 1.1 drivers finally out, it can capture 5.1 DD sound through optical, as well, which means I can record ANYTHING off my cable box in HD and full surround sound. Awesome little device.

As for the OP's problem, I still don't have a clue what could be causing it. Somehow I just don't buy the link to AnyDVD here. Something else is going on IMO.

you don't think it's at all suspect that I can get everything working until I add in AnyDVD? Before dismissing me, pleas have take the time to read the post where I outlined the permutations tested before the [public] finger pointing started.
It could be the catalyst, and not the root cause, but at least on my system there is a relationship.
For those who have the HD PVR playing nice w/ AnyDVD; did you remove the arcsoft low level filter? After some messing, I think it is playing a role in the issues I'm having.
Thanks

I never let that thing get installed the last time I reinstalled. The arcsoft software for capture is terrible at best. If you have that filter installed, remove it immediately. I would recommend doing it through ImgBurn. That stupid driver is a UDF driver and not needed. Also, I disabled half the arcsoft startup crap. There's a daemon that gets loaded at startup and an arcsoft connect service that I disabled. The issue isn't AnyDVD, it's the horribly bad arcsoft software that's the issue. :)

Same here, AnyDVD_HD and Hauppauge HD PVR with no issues.
For what its worth, I have heard about problems with drivers using other Hauppauge TV tuner cards with the HD PVR. Probably not your problem but,...

I'm thinking about extracting the video filter from TME, it's all I want. I haven't had a chance to test it all out (went back to a good image last night after some destructive exploration); hopefully that was it.

I am ,in my media pc (4870) and the software keeps freezing on blue screen.on my other pc using nvidia 8600gtx no prob,so maybe the catalyst?

Well, for what its worth, you can update your Hauppauge OEM Arcsoft TotalMedia Extreme "crap" to the full retial "crap" which supports Blu-Ray / HD DVD playback for ~$39.99 ;)

Nope. And I don't intend to. If I'm not around I let the cable box record it and then before I go to bed I just kick off a manual recording. I'm using SageTV as my recording software, though, not the crappy arcsoft stuff that comes with it. Also, a new version of the arcsoft stuff is coming in a few weeks. It allows recording to m2ts directly which is interesting.

I did that. But you have to be careful. As I found out the hard way, the oem stuff is built custom for hauppauge. If you upgrade, the custom code they use is lost. But that's how I got my full retail copy of TMT so I have no complaints really.
Octavean
5th November 2008, 18:07
Actually I was able to install the trial of TotalMedia Theater with no ill effects to the OEM Version. If you can install just the TMT full retail version from the TME then you should be good. I might upgrade but not sure yet.
For better Hauppauge HD PVR support, I was thinking of upgrading my old BeyondTV v3.x license to the latest version which would cost me about ~$49.99. SageTV would cost me about ~$75.
I prefer Vista Media Center but maybe Windows 7 Media Center will support the HD PVR since W7MCE should have H.264 stream support.
***edit***
For what its worth, its easy enough to get HD PVR .ts files playing in VMC / MCE.

5th November 2008, 18:23
Yup. BeyondTV didn't work well for me even though it would have been cheaper. SageTV has been flawless so I don't mind it at all. As for TME, well, I have the full version now and I don't use it to capture so I couldn't care less about that support. :)

I think the ArcSoft filter was the root cause. While it was fine with either the HD PVR or AnyDVD around, it didn't like both.
FWIW, uninstalling TME doesn't unregister the filter; that still needs to be done using ImgBurn.
You can get TME to leave behind its DShow filters though. They will be unregistered, but that's easy to fix with regsvr32. I only registered asvid.ax (%programfiles%\common files\arcsoft\mpeg engine\), but there are others if you need them.
Thanks for the help.

i'm also interested in recording HD content from my cable provider, but don't want to use their DVR or TiVo because of the encryption they add to the content. i believe they offer an HD box with 1394 (firewire 400) connection so that I can connect to my pc.
can someone explain how anydvd hd and hauppauge's hd pvr are used to do this ?
i'm currently running vista x64, and want to be able to record some HD channels like History HD episodes, save them to my computer, then burn them onto a dvd in HD....
Thanks
SamuriHL
6th November 2008, 13:05
They aren't. AnyDVD has absolutely nothing to do with recording HD content. The HD PVR is able to record from any component cable source. It's as simple as that. It doesn't use firewire. It uses component cables. But this is highly off topic.
