I kind of stumbled on how to update the firmware automatically. Thanks to other forum members, but somehow I got to www.lgservice.com. I selected North America, then USA as the service site. Under Product support, I selected software upgrades, then in Product Group I selected Computer Products, next Product-DVD-ROM, then Op System-Vista, then I hit SEARCH. The Automatic Firmware Downloader appeared, version 8. I selected the lgfw80.zip and saved it, opened it, and clicked on the setup.exe and installed it. It automatically upgraded my H20L from YL01 to YL05 and will continue to upgrade the firmware whenever a new one comes out. Neat program. I was a little cautious, because I know you can brick something if you mess it up.

or you could just install the automatic update software that comes with the drive

Is that on the disk that comes with the drive? I didn't see it listed as a choice. Also, do you know what version of PowerDVD is on the disk? I already have version 7.0.4007 that came on my Dell computer. PowerDVD is working fine now so I wouldn't want to screw that up by updating.

Yes it is on the disc that comes with the drive, you can also update the oem version to 4407 for 6 channel or 4617 2 channel from the cyberlink site. Is the version you have installed on the Dell a Blu-ray version?

Yes, it is. The computer came with the blu-ray player LG GBC-H20N and I installed the GGW-H20L burner yesterday. So where is this software on the disk? It's not on the auto-run menu, unless it's installed with one of the other choices. I've been looking through the folders on the disk, but haven't seen anything obvious. Also, would this software upgrade the player as well, since they're both from LG?

No the lg firmware update software doesn't upgrade PDVD, you have to go to the cyberlink site and download it

I found it quite easily on my discs, browse the disc, open the Hidef folder and it's in a folder called ......... LG_FW_update!!!

it gets installed automatically at the end of the Cyberlink install

Thanks. I found that. Can't believe I overlooked that before. I wasn't talking about updating PDVD. I was talking about updating the blu-ray player LG GBC-H20N that I already had on the computer as well as the GGW-H20L burner I just installed since both drives are from LG. I ran the update and it only updated the burner. Now when I restart the computer it blocks the fwupdate.exe from running and I have to manually start it. I went to the file and clicked Run as Administrator but it still won't run at start up. If there's no way around this (I have another program that I have to manually start), I'll just stop the attempt to run at start up and run it from time to time to see if there's an update.

All firmware updates are just to improve burning of CD/DVD...they don't do anything for HD DVD or Blu-ray playback. Just FYI.

Thanks. I notice when I right-click on the icon on the taskbar and choose "About" both drives are shown so the update software does "know" about both drives. There was nothing on the LG site about the GBC-H20N. I checked the Dell site and they list the firmware version (C102) that I already have so I guess I'm up-to-date now.

@iwgreen

My LG GBW-H20L came with a software program (on the disk) to check for firmware updates on the optical drive.

You can also, get this software program from their web-site.

If the software program is outdated and you are connected to the internet it will automatically update itself to the latest software program once executed, then once the software program is updated, then you can check for the latest firmware for you optical drive.

Also, you don't want it to automatically startup at turn on of your computer, that eats up resources and you want to keep your resources as high as possible. I have disabled mine from auto start up using msconfig and the regedit function.
I now start the software program from the start menu, just like all the other software programs.

Right you are! At my age, I need all the resources I can get.;)

PWrong, they give better support for BD-r and BD-re discs both for burning and playback
