Sound adaptation

Under this Sound Adaptation, there is an option to tick 'Enable sound compressor.' Along with it there is another option to select 'light, normal or strong.'

1) What is the difference between each of them 'light, normal and strong?'
2) The number on the Gain varies. What does that mean?
3) As the movie is played, one could see that the number keeps increasing for 'Clipped.' What does it mean?

Hope someone could cast some light on the above queries.
