I've just clean installed Windows 7 and now can't hear (but can see/play) the DVD's I'd previously ripped to my PC in mpeg format using CloneDVD mobile. The problem occurs both in Media Player and Windows Media Centre.

It also occurs on both DVDs ripped to mpeg from Vista and those ripped since installing Windows7.

I've tested ripping to AVI and they play fine for audio and visual, but obviously don't want to re-rip my DVD collection to AVI and AVI quality isn't as good as MPEG.

Suggestions for a fix welcome.

possibly your mpeg audio codec is missing or not registered/configured properly.
you could try re-installing the codec (eg via k-lite codec pack (http://www.codecguide.com/download_k-lite_codec_pack_full.htm)).

Thanks - I'm a bit nervous about going near Codec stuff - have heard horror stories. Has anyone else had this problem and solved?

Thanks - I'm a bit nervous about going near Codec stuff - have heard horror stories. Has anyone else had this problem and solved? What horror stories? If you can't play your media with Windows 7 built in codecs, you don't have much of an option other than to download a codec pack. This one should do the trick:
