View Full Version : Problem burning to DVD-R
Free DVD Coasters
23rd April 2007, 05:38
I've been using a Liteon dvd-rom and LG GSA 4160B for a while and no problem. Now my LG wont burn to DVD-R. It will burn DVD-RW and DVD RAM (haven't tried DVD+R yet). Blank DVD-R disc properties come up as file system RAW but no available space. The drives will read DVD-R.
When I attempt to burn a DVD-R the writer hangs and I have to turn off pc.
Have uninstalled all burning software and re-installed individual programs to minimise compatability problems. Have tried Nero AnyDVD and CloneDVD2,
Have uninstalled the drives and let XP re-install and still the same.
So now I have purchased an ASUS DRW-1612BL, updated firmware.
The problem remains.
I'll also mention I have installed InCd on this machine and then removed it, whether this may be a culprit I am unsure.
Can someone give me some help on this?
I am currently using TDK DVD-R 1-8x
Thought I might have a bad batch of DVD's (but half of them have worked and now they just wont)
Bought some new TDK DVD-r 16x, but the problem is still there.

Be certain the Asus is connected correctly and then try a different cable to the Asus.

I have had the same result - with DVD -R Media Using CloneDVD2
Using the 1Click5 // PRO Burn engine
- I must have it Set to "Try SAO First"
- or I have the same result
It has something to do - with the Burner
- It usually more effects LG ( based ) Drives
My solution is Simply to Use DVD +Rs only
- when using CloneDVD2 to burn
( I prefer +Rs anyway )
In the time I've spent on the LGSI forum
- We've seen this quite a lot
The "Try SAO First" setting usually resolves the 'freeze-up' Issue
- when burning -Rs with 1Click5 // PRO
We are not sure - exactly what causes this ;
It definitely depends on the Burner .
The Set-Up ?
If it also depends on an influence - from other software ?
- like if the Sonic Burn Engine - is also installed ?
- We're just not sure
There is definitely some conflict - somewhere
I don't really have a solution for you
I never resolved the Issue for Myself
I just wanted to share my experience
- before you go ripping your Computer apart
I Just use +Rs when Burning with CloneDVD2/ CloneCD
For your -Rs
You could try Burning the Back-Up Folder with IMGBurn/Nero
- See if you have the same result
( with IMGBurn/Nero - You may be able to Select SAO over DAO ( ? )
Are you able to Book-Type your DVD+Rs to DVD-ROM ?

Clonedvd2 works fine with a 4163b here (except for the known jitter issues at 16x, but that has nothing to do with Clonedvd2).
What LG models are you aware of that are affected?

Have attached new cable for the ASUS. Everything works fine, just doesn't like to burn DVD-r.
Luckily I bought a new stack of DVD-r's in case it was a just a dud batch the first time, you can never have too many drink coasters!!!

Do steps 3 and 4 from here (http://forum.slysoft.com/showthread.php?t=1559) please. Please note that step 4 actually requires you to post information.

There are some pretty terrible TDKs being sold in general stores like Costco (not officially "b grade", but essentially the same thing). Try Maxell Plus, Maxell Broadcast Quality, Verbatim, or Taiyo Yuden (premium)

My [F] HP DVD Writer 640b E223 (Ide)(LG)
will Completely Lock-Up
You have to Close CloneDVD2 - through the Task Manager
- to even get the Tray to open
The Discs I've burned - with this result - were Burned and Finalized
- and They played Fine
I can't remember if I even tried with my
[E] MAD DOG MD-16X3DVD9-8X 1.F3 (Ide)
It's been awhile since I've even burned a -R
Now with the VSO engine
- Almost All LGs- Freeze without the "Try SAO First" Option
- ( except the newest H42 - I think )
.... but - it occasionally effects other Brand Burners - as well
I wish I had a clue - as to why

I wish I still had a -R to test .... All I have are some old -RWs lying around

.wav works fine on +Rs ... I'm no where near maxed on resources

I have - a few times - Removed All Filters - and Reinstall as Needed

shannon90210,
Oddly, I have been seeing problems with those who happen to have Pxhelp20, but I fail to see how that could cause any issues. Redbook and imapi are required, obviously.
Given that in your case the burn seems to be locking up at the end with Clonedvd, I would take a look at disabling the .wav that plays at the end of the burn (that has caused lockups on some systems), but that doesn't necessarily explain why Clonedvd2 won't lockup when using +Rs on your system. Regardless, the sound playing is not the OP's issue.

Are you using an 80 pin cable? Ensure it's attached appropriately (not connected as slave).

And if it still doesn't work, then I really have no other suggestions other than trying recommended blank media. You can also try what shannon90210 suggested, and use +R media instead (booktype it to "dvd-rom").
Don't burn at 16x if you're using 16x rated media (try burning a little slower); try disabling other programs that may be running in the background while you're burning (close out of email, web browsing, etc.).

I don't know if it's related, but on an older AMD dual core system (and I've now reached the point where in August I'm going to switch my girlfriend's system to intel quad core when the Q6600 drops to about $270-$300 U.S., because I'm sick and tired of drivers/hotfixes, using "set affinity", etc. to just get certain games working properly with AMD's dual cores on XP even . . . eventually I started using runfirst.exe to solve these issues for her; I just don't enjoy having to explain how to fix these quirks over and over; conversely, Intel's Conroes work perfectly without additional tweaking on my notebook, so . . .), I was experiencing issues when I had other programs running in the background and also burning with Clonedvd2 at the same time (the famous write 10 error . . .).
Anyway, I'd be interested in whether dvd-rs now work for you (you might also want to try disabling the .wav that plays at the end).

If your PC is a prebuilt, the jumpers are most likely set to CS(Cable Select). The new Asus drive would have been set to Master from the factory.

IDE Bus reinstalled
The problem refuses to leave without more of a fight.
My thoughts are that an option to write to DVD-R has been switched off somewhere - this is beyond me as to where or if that is even a possibility.
A software compatibility error has become entrenched and no amount of cleaning or reinstalling has thusly proved successful in removing it, causing my current DVD-R burn dilema.
I will be trying Verbatim DVD+R before the week ends.
This will be followed (if unsuccesful) by my faithful friend the format. Always guaranteed to rid ones PC of those constant windows niggles and speed up the computer to 'Blimey - thats quick'.
Thanks to all for your input

Hey guys,
I had the same problem recently. I have a Sony VHS to DVD burner and I use Staples DVD-R disks. I burned some of my cassetes and tried to play the DVD. On the burner, before I took the CD out, I tried it, everything worked fine. Then, I put it into my PC and after a while, it finally loaded. It said free space: 0 bytes. used space: 0 bytes. I went into properties and saw that it said, "File System: RAW".
I found the fix right away. Being a dumbass :), I accidentally forgot to finalize the DVD. If you have the same burner, you go into System Menu --> Finalize.
That helped. After that, my PC played all my CDs.
Hope I helped!:),
