DVD copies freeze at spots

I make backups of all my kids' DVDs because they scratch the hell out of them. Usually, I end up with poor backups that freeze multiple times, but I do get a copy without errors. I use fairly cheap media (DVD-R). Is that the problem? I also copy on the fly. Is that a poor method. I've tried slowing the burn speed, but that doesn't seem to help. I have a dual core AMD X2 with 1G, so I don't think the computer is the problem. Any ideas?

This can engage your buffer underrun protection on your burner and consequently could produce poor burns.
