Default Can't rip Torchwood (Season 4) Miracle Day, Region 1, USA

I've tried ripping two DIFFERENT copies of Torchwood Season 4 Blu Ray (disc 1) to no avail.

When I try to rip video to hard disk, both copies errored out at exactly the same spot - 4%. When I try to rip to ISO, both copies errored out at a different spot from rip video to hard disk (9% instead of 4%) but the same none-the-less.

I've tried to rip the ISO image with the copy protection but I still end up with the same error - Error reading from Drive F: Sector xxxxxx - yyyyyy. See attached screenshots.

I've also had a similar problem with multiple copies of Bored to Death Season 3.

From everything I've heard and read on this forum, I shouldn't be having this problem.

PLEASE HELP!!!

Your disc and / or drive is dirty and / or defective.

There have been a number of titles that have all discs made in the same batch fail at the same spot - in other words a manufacturing defect. (early Avatar discs come to mind) Sounds like that's your problem. Could be your drive, also as James mentioned above.

I can understand an intentional manufacturing defect (a la the old CD copy protection where they would burn a bad spot in the disc). If that's the case - so be it. My problem is that everything I've read so far says that ANYDVD HD should be able to rip ANY Blu Ray to ISO even with all copy protections.

The discs were not dirty - I checked and cleaned them first to make sure. Several of them were absolutely pristine. The Blu Ray drive works perfectly on almost every title and has the latest firmware. Is it possible there's some defect with the drive that causes this to happen only with these two titles? 1 in a million from my technical expertise point of view.

Please elaborate on how you came to the conclusion that it is dirty discs or a bad drive? What from the logs makes you confident in this diagnosis?

Bluray discs do not use physical defects as a copy protection. If you get a read error while trying to backup a BD(and you did) , with or without AnyDVD(HD) decrypting the disc, the disc is defective/dirty/damaged or your drive is dying. AnyDVD is not at fault.

READ errors on Blu-rays?

Real simple, no log file needed. BDs do not use physical defects as copy protection, period. You get a read error there are only two possibilities:
  1. The disc is at fault by being dirty (oily film left on disc when manufactured), defective (bad pressing), damaged (scratched)
  2. Dying drive that can't properly read the data

At current there are no other alternatives because Bluray discs do not use physical defects as copy protection. You don't even need AnyDVD to back up a BD, only to remove the copy protections.

Discs can be bad without any visual indication. Usually that means something went wrong in the manufacturing process. Believe me, it happens often. Set top players can often bypass these errors. You might see a problem in the movie or you might not, but when trying to do a bit for bit copy to make a back up it just can't be done. I've been backing up my Blu Rays for 4-5 years and have had to return at least a dozen that could not be read by a blu ray drive. I mentioned Avatar because it was one disc that many people had to return when the original version first came out on blu ray. Again, no visible problem on the disc, it just couldn't be read.

As FurryGuy and the sticky he linked said, there are no physical copy protection schemes on blu rays. If you can't read it, either the disc or your drive is bad.

I didn't mean to imply ANYDVD HD was at fault - just couldn't figure out what was going on!

I decided to get a new Asus drive and lo and behold it is working fine to rip Torchwood Miracle Day. I'm sure it will work fine with Bored to Death as well.

I appreciate the comments/support about the old drive malfunctioning and am happily back on my way...
