Default Windows 7 Safe Mode and AnyDVD

As part of troubleshooting a problem with Nero Video I needed to run Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit) in safe mode while importing a DVD disk. I was not able to start AnyDVD through the icon while in safe mode. Should I be able to do this?

Probably not as when in safe mode Windows only loads in very basic drivers to allow you to get in to Windows

Default Probably not

I suspect the AnyDVD driver is not going to launch in "safe" mode.
Remember, AnyDVD is not really a "program" as such but is a system driver.

Default More information

I wouldn't expect AnyDVD to be launched automatically when in Windows safe mode, but when I click the AnyDVD icon to manually start it I get the error message "Failed to init ElbyCDIO" . It appears that anydvdtray.exe starts momentarily.
I have the file ElbyCDIO.DLL in this location: C:\WINDOWS\SYSWOW64 , and the file ElbyCDIO.SYS in this location: C:WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS .

Looking at the text file SYSINFO.TXT(C:\Users\name\Documents\AnyDVD_LOGS\An yDVD_7.0.4.0_INFO.ZIP\SYSLOG\SYSINFO.TXT) I find this entry:

ElbyCDIO.dll (C:\Windows\system32\ElbyCDIO.dll)
Version: 6.1.2.0 (6.1.2.0)
Company: Elaborate Bytes AG
Product: Elaborate Bytes CDRTools
Copyright: Copyright ⌐ 2000 - 2011 Elaborate Bytes AG
Description: ElbyCDIO DLL
Trademarks: CDRTools, CloneCD and Elaborate Bytes are Trademarks of Elaborate Bytes AG
FileVersion: 6, 1, 2, 0
ProductVersion: 6, 1, 2, 0
Comments: Unified W9X/NT/2000/XP/XP-64
PrivateBuild: No
SpecialBuild: No

Seems odd that what appears to be a description of my system would show ElbyCDIO.DLL as installed in \SYSTEM32 directory when it is located in the directory \SYSWOW64

Another oddity is that I don't see ElbyCDIO.DLL running in safe mode or normal startup mode, using both Task Manager and Process Explorer. Why is ElbyCDIO needed for Windows safe mode and not normal mode?

It is always needed, and Windows won't load it in "safe" mode, as it only loads "essential" drivers. That's the purpose of the safe mode.

That's a "Microsoft Thing" with x64 OS. They decided to put 64bit files in System32 and 32 bit files in Syswow64. I never really understood why they didn't introduce a System64 directory for 64bit files. Maybe this would be too clean and easy for them?
IMHO this is not only confusing but plain stupid.

James, I read an explanation of all this MS folder naming stuff at The 'Program Files (x86)' and ' SysWOW64 ' folders explained, and it still makes virtually NO sense. Yeah, its a "Microsoft Thing" like Hungarian notation. I swear they make it harder for third party vendors to do things with the idiocy.

This just confirms how truly illogical and alien the thinking is at MS.
