Another argument for the most powerful processor he can get is the ability to use services like Air Video, Plex, or Boxee to steam is content to the web for viewing on his long trips. Then all he'll need is an iPad or Android tablet or such.

The powerful processor comes in to help transcode the movie into a compatible format with his viewing client. Conventional wisdom used to be that you could use your old, slow computer for a server...and in many cases that still is true. With the ability to easily stream software to smart phones, tablets, and such...it's now almost a requirement to have a decently powerful server computer.

Thanks again for your help guys, much appreciated !

I'm not a total nerd, well, some family and co-workers may feel differently but I'm not up to the stage of building my own system by bits and pieces just yet, so I'll look for systems that have those features you guys have mentioned and I'm figuring it will be a desktop to replace our old one.

by the by, when I travel, much like I am right now here on site in Vineland NJ for a couple weeks, I bring several hard drives along with a lot of video on board to keep me company, as I seldom watch regular tv. More of a movie nut and also some tv shows. But as I made mention, I had been making the video's into iPod videos and now I'm going with the Generic MP4 and picking the 720 size and highest quality, that seems to be a good trade off, as I can still load those onto my phone or ipad.

I use a Micca 600 media player, I can hook up two hard drives to that and then an HDMI cable from that to the hotel tv and presto whammo, my own video jukebox, very handy and looks great, just the ones that are in 720 look just a tad nicer

Again, much appreciated guys,
G2

Good trade-off, ripping your video on your home desktop PC and watching the rips when you're on the road. You get a quick rip speed and don't have a lot of powerful and really expensive hardware to lug around when traveling.

And if you want to do an occasional rip while traveling you know there will be some speed restraints so the rip will take a bit longer than if done on the desktop.

I also much prefer watching movie/TV show/documentary DVDs/Blurays than regular TV. No commercials and being able to watch what I want when I want.

Have fun ripping, and fun watching. Cheers!

Indeed !

I just re-did my collection of 24 all 8 seasons and believe me, that is a series that you wouldn't want to have tried to watch week to week !! I never did see them on regular tv, a friend told me about it and I finally bit the bullet and got the entire set and I'd have gone a bit crazy waiting week to week to see what happens next!

I brought along my season of Brisco County Jr and redoing them into 720, sure wish they brought that out in wide screen...

I liked 'The Adventures of Brisco County Jr.'! I wished Fox, the network that carried it, would have given that show more time to find an audience.

I plan on getting the DVD set of that show around X-Mas or right after New Year's.

Guess he corrected what I was saying but not clear on how it was understood....

That wth I stated but guess it wasn't read that way...desktop for power and conversion and ripping or burning movies to external HDD and then use your laptop when on the road to watch the movie without lugging around a desktop. Because the movies files itself are stored on the external USB powered HDD you just need to plug to your laptop and watch your movies you made when you need to.
