Default XP BOSD with VCD 5.4.5.0

Hi All,

I'm getting an XP BSOD blue screen when I try to access VCD with a mounted image.

I get this message on the blue screen:

STOP:0x0000009B (0x00040199, 0xA41D307C, 0xA41D2D78, 0x8056A181)

The image (that worked before) mounts ok, but if I try to load it with BD-Rebuilder or even copy a file with windows explorer, it goes to BSOD with the above message.

I recently updated to the latest version of Norton AV and think that probably is the cause.
At least that was the last major change. I'm using NAV 19.7.1.5

Has anyone else had this problem, or have a possible solution?

TIA.

PS I have unistalled and re-installed VCD so that is not a solution. I'm trying to avoid a messy re-install of NAV (or completely replacing it) if possible, if there is a simpler solution, I would appreciate hearing about it. TIA, again

Very likely. I am also quite sure this isn't VCD related at all. It might happen with original discs as well. Feel free to try it. Maybe you can exclude all optical drives from AV scans. Don't know if this helps, as AV programs hook very deep into the system. Or just get rid of your AV scanner.

James, as usual you are right again. If I disable Norton Antivirus auto protection, No Blue Screen. Thanks for your feedback.

I want to replace Norton Anti-virus, any suggestions, are more than welcome.

PS this new version of NAV does not have a simple solution to exclude drives. I seriously question the original credibility of the spirtual philosphy of Symantec's original Norton Antivirus lately (i.e to protect the customer from viruses). Especially after this "Flame" news.

I just want to purge Norton Antivirus but need something to replace it with an AV that is not so corrupted with clandestine politics. Any suggestions are welcome

If you want my honest opinion:
Don't use any anti virus software. Use your brain. If you download something suspicous, use an on demand scanner (but this will usually not help anyway).

Why?

1.) Anti virus tools hook deep into the system, often causing more problems than they solve. They use rootkit methods to hide from malware, and often half of the system is corrupted by such practice. They often cause other programs to fail without any reason (see your own example above) and hunting down such problems is usually impossible. AV programs aren't programmed "by the book", for obvious reasons. This will cause trouble, sooner or later.

2.) Your computer will be slower. Much slower.

3.) They give you a feeling of false security. You feel safe, because you are protected by the "latest and greatest". Trust me, you are not.

4.) If you want to "feel protected", install Microsoft security essentials. At least this isn't a "resource hog" like many others.

5.) For really suspicous files, you can use online scanners. But still, I have seen trojans which aren't detected by any of the major AV programs.

6.) Best advice: Use your brain. A lot. Don't click file attachments, don't download programs which promise you "free sex & free beer", ....

If you HAVE to have AV there are two decent (opinions will differ) that in my experience have less obtrusive memory/system conflicting footprints:
  • Microsoft's Security Essentials
  • ZoneLab's Zone Alarm with Antivirus

I have both seperately on different computers (Win 7 64 & 32 bit) and have had no noticeable problems compared to NAV.

The advice James gives is excellent whether you have AV or not. Be aware of where you go on the internet and what you download/install.

Thanks for the feedback, guys. NAV is out and MSE is in, for now.

NAV used to be a good product back in the early days of AV, too bad it's so screwed up now.

On the vunerability of the internet to viruses, you don't have to be careless to be infected these days. But I agree that common sense goes a long ways to avoid it
