Linux has some advantages over MS but it has a long way to go to be truly competitive.

Then you don't have a MAC. The OS is what makes it a MAC.

I'll still need a Windows to use Slysoft's product's only. That's why I will do a dual boot.

i'm mainly a unix user (linux/solaris) but i also have a mac mini as my htpc.

i only use windows for slysoft's apps, and then its just in a virtual machine - i have no hardware running windows (other than work's laptop).

i don't want to get into the coming flamewar, but windows just has no use to me, it has nothing that i don't prefer or can't do better on unix, and i have consoles for games.

i'm certainly not saying unix is for everyone, i just grew out of it myself about five years ago when i realised 90% of the apps i used on windows were actually linux ports anyway - firefox, thunderbird, various editors and media players etc.....

A flame war simply isn't going to happen.

As for Windows and *nix the big thing is that, generally, I think it's easier for less experienced/knowledgeable people to find the software they are looking for under Windows. It can be a bit more work and take more understanding of things when using *nix.

As a whole, one is not necessarily better than the other but in certain tasks one may be better suited to getting the job done. I'd really love to get a Mac Mini or MacBook or whatever at some point for some A/V stuff. I still believe Mac is the way to go in that department.

Purchase a Mac OS and install it on the PC of your choice. I believe the latest version is X v10.5 Leopard.

The last I knew it still required hacks to install it on non-Apple approved hardware regardless of the switch to Intel processors. It's been awhile since I really did any digging on the subject.
