I just saw in the local Staples paper where you can buy new releases for $4.99. Once you open the wrap (This is the part I can not figure out) you have 48 hours to watch and then the disk will not operate anymore. Does/has anyone figured out how this works? It says once the seal is broken, and it looks like shrink wrap. Also could a person copy this on a hard drive for later watching. I am not condoning piracy only what if something would happen and you could not watch the whole thing within 48 hours after the wrapper came off. Such as a child finding it and opening it while you were at work or getting ready to go somewhere and such. Just wondering if anyone else has seen these and figured out how they work. Its a neat concept just my mind hasn't figured out....How do they do that. LOL!

It's a self-destructing disc. It works as a result of a chemical reaction. Once the disc is exposed to something like oxygen the life of the disc is now on a timer. You have 48 hours before it becomes unreadable.

The legal questions is....... can you legally back up that disk before it dies?
After all you do OWN the origional DVD. -W |

Do you have proof of ownership for the original DVD? And does this 48h disc restrict you from using it after 48 hours? Or does it just state that it won't work after that time?

5.00 USD for a disc would be idea but what if it didn't play at all and you didn't have the time to take it back for another copy?

From the beginning of hearing about these types of discs I thought the idea was bad. On paper it looks great but in reality the cost is higher and I think there are too many things that can go wrong or be problematic.

Wow! Interesting thoughts and responses from everyone. I just did not know how they worked. So once the disk is exposed to air then it starts degrading. Now that is some wierd stuff. That is why they say to throw it away or recycle the plastic disc.
Drinklyeanddie, I am like you. $3.00 plus tax at the local store plus 2 1/2 day rental. And if I have a problem they correct it. Thanks everyone. Technology is amazing on this stuff. |

I'd read about them, but I didn't know they'd be crazy/Circuit-City-y enough to actually start selling them. We'll see how it goes (not well my guess). Anyone here who would buy/has bought one?
