I have Roxio software to take my VHS tapes and create a file. If I choose AVI it creates an enormous file. If I choose MP2 or MP1, I can't convert it to the smaller AVI for my Archos 605. There must be an easier way to go about this. I can make a DVD from my VHS but then I don't seem to be able to convert it using my Slysoft CloneDVD moble. Any clues as to what file format I should be using?

Try using a dedicated stream ripper like Nero Vision or AVPro to capture your VHS tapes to (mega) MPEG1/VOB files. You can then make a DVD from there without issue and rip using CDM.
