Hello,

As an reply to this this post from James, I got the following question.

I got my PC connected to my speakers with the following set-up:

Is this set-up also recommended?

no

1) tv spdif out only works with internal tuners, not external sources, in some cases it works but you only have 2 channels or pro logic
2) audio must first go to ampli through hdmi, for best performance. if your ampli is not hdmi capable then connect spdif from sound card to ampli

I got only 2.1 set-up, so having 2 channels won't matter??

So if I would go directly to the Onkyo with HDMI, will I notice any difference in quality with 2.1 set-up you think?

Obviously, the more direct the better quality. moreover, via spdif you would lose the HD formats. let the card send LPCM stream with reclock and wasapi and let the receiver handle it. the downside is that you need a double hdmi cable

keep the spdif from tv to receiver to listen to internal tuner dolby downsampled to 2.1 channel from the receiver, not the tv. each component must do its job, the tv displays pictures, the receiver handles sound. the tv is not as good at decoding sound and downsampling as the onkyo is

besides, the receiver will be insulted if you let the tv do the job for it and will not be your friend anymore

the main question for me at this point is; will I notice (is it possible) to hear any frame drops trough this set-up?

because James does not recommend SPDIF out and DOES recommend HDMI.... I got both at the same time :P

Connectors don't matter that much, it's what you feed into ReClock that matters. PCM = good, as ReClock can resample. Compressed audio = bad, as it can only drop / duplicate packets. See the manual for background information.
If you must use SPDIF with more than 2 channels, use the AC3 encoder.
