Default AnyDVD - Glossary of Terms

I confess im a technical geek and enjoy reading the meanings / descriptions of certain terms - im analytical by nature and just keep absorbing information. Therefore, I would like to pose a suggestion - a Glossary of Terms which describe DVD protection systems / terms and basically how they work. This Glossary would also be a laymans terms / technical terms which suits new and experienced users.

Even good old Wikipedia has no information on terms like "Structural Protection" / "FluxDVD" / "Cell Pieces" / "Title Sets" / "Invalid Program from Program Chain" / "Bad Sector Protections" etc and systems like AaRRCos / FluxDVD etc. I believe it would be intriguing to see how these systems work in basically confusing programmes to prevent backups of DVD movies.

To be honest I was thinking exactly the same thing. It would be awesome to have something to refer to either in a help file in AnyDVD itself or as a sticky on the forums. When I see the likes of 'Structual copy protection' all I know is its an advanced form of protection, it would be really nice to know what this actually is and how it protects DVD's.

Well there are a few links on Wikipedia which outline stuff:

Couldn't find anything on Wikipedia for FluxDVD

Ive seen these URL's already, but I was referring to the main protection schemes themselves, like even including in AnyDVD what protection system is used on the DVD itself, whereas currently its a generic "structural copy protection". Like, what are cell pieces, what are invalid VOBU's, How does FluxDVD work, invalid programme chains. The examples you have given are quite common, but the protection systems used and how they work is what I would love to know.

Yea, I know exactly what you are saying, I was simply posting those URL's to wet your appetite. I am agreeing with you 100% it would be cool to have an explanation of some of these protection schemes

Another thing I would like to see is a protection index or a protection rating. When AnyDVD scans a disk it would be cool to have some idea how difficult a perticular disk is to copy.

AnyDVD did used to report what protection system was used on the DVD. James removed it, so it's unlikely you'll see it added back.

I don't follow. There should be no difference in "difficulty" in copying any disc. That's why it's called "Any" DVD.

Here it is on Multimedia Wikipedia, Google is a fine way to start.

What I really mean is the amount of protection that is on the inserted disk. A disk with more protection theoretically would be more difficult to copy without AnyDVD.

Not really, if you don't have a way to bypass the protection then they are all just as hard to copy
