There are read errors which can be caused by a badly pressed disc, dirty disc, damaged disc, problematic filters, driver conflicts, and a slowly dying DVD drive among other things.

These instructions will not help you now as this title has structural protection. But for future read errors you should look here

Download Nero cd-dvd speed. It's a free program. With Anydvd running in the background, select the tab labelled "scandisc". Select the appropriate drive letter, and click "start". If Nero cd-dvd speed reports read errors, your disc is (probably) bad and needs to be exchanged--even if it plays fine (or your optical drive could be slowly dying).

But still YES - as far as the truth of my (and Mike R's) post goes.

At the time I posted yesterday, and when Mike R posted yesterday... (and for all time for that matter) it's remains true that 99 out of 100 times a File IO3 error is a bad pressing or a defect.

However, in light of new reports today, and all in the same exact sectors, it appears that this title may well be the other 1 in 100 that is indeed a new structural copy protection.

Nor would we want to use this anomaly to start questioning every single File IO3 error that comes along in the future. The "one out of 100" rule still applies - though Precious looks like it very well could indeed be that one exception.

I would say not to be so quick to jump to the "bad disc" conclusion when there's structural protection on the disc, and it's a new or unreleased title. Wait for others to post logs, and check to see if the errors are identical.

When it's only one poster it's very likely a bad disk - by an overwhelming margin.

You'll note that my answer to him didn't speak in absolutes - just in case he was that one in a hundered.

As the title gets "history" one of 2 things happens.
Iether the title proves to be OK, or as in this case... there is indeed a structural issue.

But the 1st call MikeR and myself made was correct at the time - we can afford to close 99 cases now and go back and re-open one later if more evidence appears.

When you start "playing to" the exceptions and not the rule... you become as crippled as our govornment.

Complication acknowledged.....This encryption found on the movie title "PRECIOUS" is like that of the encryption found on Transformers "Rise of The Fallen". Just applied to a another DVD movie title . I was successful backing up a 1 for 1 disc for travel to a 8.5 DL DVD using CloneCD 5.3.1.4 . This means (to the novice) CloneCD creates an exact disc to disc backup which simply transfers the headache causing, coaster creating encryption intact to the back up disc. This back up type omits my ability to remove unneeded title sets for now, but allows me create a playable "FULL DISC" (menus and special features) back up disc and revisit the encryption removal at a later date or once Slysoft comes up with a AnyDVD decrypting resolution.

So 1:1 works, reauthoring doesn't and will need an update to fix. Good to know!
