I use AnyDVD HD and CloneDVD2 to create backup DVDs and I have been experiencing dropouts in signal during playback of the copied discs. The dropouts usually occur in the later sections of the playback (after 60-70 minutes). The discs continue to play and there are dropouts of video only as well as audio AND video (never audio dropouts alone). The problem seems intermittent. I am using an OPPO BDP-83 for playback hooked into a Denon AVR 3808CI feeding an OPTOMA EP1690 projector. Any suggestions as to cause? solution? My guess is that the compressed backup DVD (4GB rather than the normal 6-8GB for a movie) coupled with the higher velocity of the outer edges of the disc are causing a reading problem...but then again, I don't know what I'm talking about!! I'd appreciate any help. Thanks.

You problem is the media. You need to use high quality blanks. As you say the problem is at the outer edge of the disk which is the fastest point of rotation and poor quality disks fail the most.

My choice would be as the MOD says bad media but also how you burn the media and if your multitasking also cause problem for playback burns as well. Also how old your unit is and if you clean the laser lens also makes a big difference in how well it read and burns. Also try reducing your speed of burns to at least half the rated media speed to prevent making to many coasters.

mtroum, switch to using only Verbatim DVD+R or Verbatim DVD+R DL media, and your problem should go away.
You also may want to check the data side of the media that you have burned. The burned area will be a lighter color than the unburned area. It should look like a solid color. If there are "tracks" in it, it could indicate a dying drive. But if it is solid colored, and it's not Verbatim media, it is likely the media. |

I'll also note that if you're using DVD-5's, and if your drive CANNOT set the booktype to DVD-ROM - then the Verbtim DVD-R becomes a good choice.
