So if my Sony 400 disc Blu-Ray player's build date is September 2009 it will continue to play backed-up copies even if they are Cinavia protected provided I do not allow it to update via the internet....is this correct to the best of your knowledge?

I don't think the build date is important, but the date the model was released to market.

If you like, you can read all the legal documents on the AACS website
As a consequence, software players will get Cinavia detectors sooner or later. PowerDVD already detects DVD-Audio watermarks, adding Cinavia should be a piece of cake.
The software player I use won't. This is important to repeat. Those of you using commercial software players should *SERIOUSLY* consider keeping all the patches for your player and a way to reinstall them. Current versions are good as they don't detect Cinavia and work with the latest BD+/BD-J titles. Otherwise, consider using something like MPC-HC + ffdshow for playing backups that contain Cinavia. I really can't wait for SlyPlayer now...

P.S. No, I won't be reading through a bunch of legal documents!

Right. I think it's all models that have been RELEASED since Q4 2009 that contain it. I you can find a player that was released before that, you should be fine. I hope.

You can get an Oppo BDP-83, that is still being sold and doesn't have Cinavia detection, according to Oppo anyways.

I'm so glad I decided to totally SHUN Blu-Ray.
An upconvertying DVD player with an HDTV isn't perfect - but it's sure headache free!!!

wait a few weeks until we know which players have cinivia in the latest firmware, the discs have literally only just come out in the shops, i hope the LG BD560 doesn't have it as i'm thinking of buying 1 soon, it supports NTFS harddrives and .mkv files and is only £104.

@clams

Bah, screw that. I like BD's. Superior video and excellent HD audio. It's just that I'd rather go with an HTPC for flexibility than a stand alone. And, it would seem that was a good choice. This Cinavia crap won't affect me at all on the HTPC. I've simply been running tests on the PS3 to find out how robust it is. It's pretty nasty for sure. Just use something that doesn't know about it for playback.

The rental version did not have any Cinavia logo anywhere.
They are probably stuffing the Cenavia protection under the "Copy Protected" umbrella they've had a logo for for ages. No need for them to advertise that they have a protection that is currently somewhat effective. Though supplying a DVD with the BD which is not protected is something of a facepalm moment

Since the Cinavia player is looking for the Cinavia it will have it, and the back-up copy should play.

In others words can AnyDVD HD rip the disk and keep Cinavia in the audio after the rip?

AnyDVD HD can't remove Cinavia, so I don't really see what it is you are asking about here. If the original have Cinavia on it, the copy will have it as well.
