Hi Guys, Some background.
Long time user of VCD, AnyDVD, MyMovies, Media Centre. Currently running Windows 7 MC. The problem: A working system with 5.4.4.0, then upgraded to 5.4.5.0. VCD 5.4.5.0 would seem to mount ISO DVD images (drive appears in finder) but when clicking on the drive in explorer you get the "please insert disc" message rather than the contents of the disc. After reading forum posts of somebody else who had this with 5.4.5.0 I followed their lead and downgraded to 5.4.4.0 again and all was back to normal and working, until! This week I tried to play a DVD (ISO) and yada, the same problem ("please insert disc") as I had with 5.4.5.0. After much playing and reading forum posts I tried removing MS Security Suite and disabling Windows Defender as some thought that was the problem with 5.4.5.0, no Joy. More experimenting and I have found that if I uninstall VCD -> reboot -> re-install VCD it works fine and mounts ISO's until the next reboot. The problem is the same regardless of whether 5.4.4.0 or 5.4.5.0 is installed, your back to "please insert disc" message after a re-boot. AnyDVD reports the VCD drive as mounted and gives the details of the image but you just can't access the drive from W7. Anyone any ideas, anyone else had/having this problem? Cheers! Roy... |

How are you trying to access the drive, with what program? When does the "Please insert disc..." message come up? RIght after reboot? Something has to be accessing the ISO/drive if you're getting "Please insert disc..." message. Anyone else have any ideas?

As I said in my post "VCD would seem to mount ISO DVD images (drive appears in finder) but when clicking on the drive in explorer you get the "please insert disc" message rather than the contents of the disc." Replace finder with explorer in the above, mainly use a mac ![]() So to reiterate with no ISO mounted double click an ISO or mount it by right click method in VCD, VCD seems to mount the drive, the mounted drive appears in explorer. If you double click on the drive in explorer thats when you get the message to insert disc when you should see the contents of the disc in the explorer window. Additionally AnyDVD gives no errors and looking at status, the details of the disk are displayed as normal as if it mounted correctly. Obviously as windows seems to think there is no disc in the drive no programs such as PDVD can access the drive either. Iv'e tried all the combinations of mounting, unmounting, rebooting in-between etc but the only way to get it to work is uninstall VCD -> Reboot -> re-install VCD. VCD then works as normal and you can mount and unmount ISO's till the cows come home with no problems until the next time the system is rebooted then it fails to mount correctly as above. I don't know how to get AnyDVD to produce a log so any help with that one appreciated although not sure it will show anything as AnyDVD seems to be unaware of the problem judging by the status window output Screen shot after double clicking the H drive with AnyDVD status window alongside. |

Are the images on a local drive or on the NAS? If on the NAS try putting one on a local drive and see if it does the same thing

Just for completeness here is the same screen grab with VCD working following un-install -> reboot -> re-install. As can be seen, this time double clicking the H drive displays the contents of the drive as one would expect and also the name of the ISO is appended to the drive name.
AnyDVD shows the same status information as it did when the drive was inaccessible from windows. |

@Adbear
All the images are are on a local drive, D: in the screen shot, where they have been for the last few years. D: is made up of a 4TB RAID 5 Array. |

Do you have just a normal single drive you could put an image on? It's possible something is messed up with the RAID driver which is why eliminating anything like that is the first thing to do

reddie, if you think that rev 5.4.4.0 worked, I would advise doing a complete uninstall and re-install to the version that worked then go from there. i.e.
1. Uninstall VCD from the control panel 'add/remove programs'. 2. Re-boot (important to do before re-installing VCD). 3. Re-install VCD 5.4.4.0. Check if it works. 4. Re-boot 5. Check VCD again. If it's still giving you problems then it's not the uprev anyway. Probably the RAID array as Adbear suggests .Edit: BTW you do know that VCD was written for windows and not MAC? If you're using windows in a MAC VM environment, uninstalling could be more complicated. If 5.4.4 works ok for you, and you want the new version, repeat the steps for a complete uninstall before re-installing the new version. Last edited by Roycal; 29th February 2012 at 04:28. |
